The EdTech UNconference « Principal's Corner September 2013 Welcome Back To School! I can’t believe a new school year is underway! It seems like yesterday school was ending and students were eager to sleep in and play with friends. Today, I find students are eager to buckle down and hit the books! As many of you know, our school day has been extended by an additional 53 minutes per day this school year. We have also made some changes in some of our classrooms where teachers will be co-teaching with each other. Author Stephen Covey has written a book around student leadership called Leader In Me. I am very grateful for the opportunities we have at Field Elementary. Sincerely,

First Steps Toward Becoming a 21st Century Educator Recently I was asked to write an article for the European Council of International Schools Shortcuts Newsletter about using web 2.0 tools to develop professional learning communities for international school teachers, at an introductory level. Having just finished giving a presentation on that very topic in Qatar, I, of course, had lots to say (not quite as eloquently as others, unfortunately). As usual, I figured I would share it here… Though if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already developed your very own (and totally fabulous) PLN, so any advice or tips you can add would be greatly appreciated! The 21st Century Educator: Embracing Web 2.0 Tools in Your Professional Practice However, all of that changed when I started to embrace web 2.0 tools in my professional practice. The development of a personal learning network (or PLN) is absolutely essential for any successful 21st century educator. Basically, it works by generating a barcode on-screen and then measuring how long it takes until that same barcode is detected by the camera. This method of measurement also takes into account delays caused by camera, grabber hardware, video output card and the video display. VideoLat can take round-trip measurements, with the same system both benerating and detecting the barcodes. A future release will also allow asymetric measurements, using a videoLat-system on both ends. Enhancements: Added missing Help book Requirements: zbar (version 0.10 tested) for barcode generation zint (version 2.3.2 tested) for barcode detection Mac OS X

NETS Implementation - Student Friendly Standard Names While working on a webpage for staff and students, it didn't make sense to call the standards by their "standard category". For example, second graders would have a hard time reading "Communication and Collaboration". The following could be used as Student friendly equivalents. Communication and Collaboration = Research and Information Fluency = Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making = Digital Citizenship = Technology Operations and Concepts = Rebecca Amerson made a cool Prezi to explain student friendly METS:
