Click4Biology Twisted tracks: watch metro maps transform to real-life geography | Cities Public transit maps occupy a unique place in the mapping world, and must strike a careful balance between readability, detail and aesthetic design. To that end, they necessarily distort the city’s true geography and with it, our own mental conception of the city too. But just how distorted are the world’s metro maps? A recent series of animated graphics, created by the DIY cartographers of the online forum Reddit, answers that question. London As is the case with most metro maps, London’s iconic Tube map exaggerates the size of the city centre, while shortening and simplifying the lines radiating out toward its periphery. Berlin Berlin’s public transit map, which looks strikingly similar to London’s, undergoes a similar transformation. Borrowing a Powerful Brainstorm Protocol from IDEO This summer I spent a week at IDEO in San Francisco learning about design thinking and their process for tackling challenges. While I was there, I observed a team brainstorm and was shocked by their results. Like most teachers, I want students to brainstorm and generate ideas to fuel their inquiries and drive projects. However, this seemingly simple task of generating ideas is really challenging for students for a few reasons. During a brainstorm, students: Self-censor limiting the flow of ideas.Fear “bad ideas” or “dumb ideas.”Jump to a solution instead of investigating possibilities and living in the space of ambiguity. All of these tendencies limit a student’s creativity and their ability to generate a large number of ideas. Step 1: Heads Down Silent 3 Minute Brainstorm Using Post-its Students have 3 minutes to silently generate as many ideas as possible writing each idea on a separate post-it note. Read through these questions and the answers to check that you are doing the right thing. What’s the most important thing to bear in mind? The first thing is to BE CLEAR! Most students do not even manage to communicate their ideas clearly to the examiner. Regardless of whether or not your answer is stunningly original or crammed with a variety of interesting examples, if it is clear then you will already have a massive head start over the majority of other students from elsewhere in the world. The second thing is to remain focussed on the question. If my answer is not completely different to everyone else’s will I lose? Most good essays will offer well balanced, plausible and convincing answer to the knowledge question that has been asked. How many examples do I need?
