Quick Tip: Install Pearltrees Bookmarklet on iPhone
After my recent accolades on Pearltrees service, I received a comment from a frequent Pearltrees user asking about installing the Bookmarklet to iOS Safari on his iPhone. By following the directions given on the iPad, I was successful at this and want to share. If you use Pearlrees either as a web service or on the iPad, you will see a button entitled “Pearler”. According to the FAQs, here’s what that does: • What is the pearler? The pearler is an extension that allows you to easily and quickly collect web pages directly from your browser. When you like a web page, click on the pearler to chose directly where you’d like to place the link within your library: in your drop-zone, in an existing pearltree or in a brand new pearltree you’ve just created for your new pearl. The pearler is available for every browser. Enough of the teasing, here’s what to do on an iPad (and hence iPhone). First… Then follow the instructions on the right side of the image below to set up a bookmark Continue reading:

September 2012 To depict elements of the topography of a landscape in a symbolic, abstract, geometrically sound but also eventually easily understandable way is a core discipline of cartography. Beneath all topographic elements of a landscape mountains are for sure amongst the most challenging ones to model and depict. Not only the derived geometry needs to fulfill the constraints of allowing a meaningful combination with other map elements but also the applied cartographic design should support the visual impression from the terrain features and especially the most dramatic ones, including the mountains itself. It is therefore not a big surprise that beyond the most famous cartographers you can find especially such which have deserved their merits by designing and producing cartographic mountain depictions of high quality. Say Goodbye to Pinterest and Hello to Pearltrees A few weeks ago, I began to use a new service called Pearltrees, and its accompanying iPad app. Since that time, I have explored the service, shared and gathered pearls, and raved about it to every person I can think of. Now its time in the spotlight on iSource is well-deserved. With all the hubbub of syncing bookmarks and how “everybody is doing it” (Safari with iCloud, Chrome, etc.), Pearltrees quietly stands to the side as a more powerful, intuitive, and beautiful way to organize what you uncover on the web – as a Pearl. Drop a web link into the “Pearler” and connect that site (err, Pearl) with whatever you think it best fits with. It’s “Pinterest” meets “bookmark syncing” meets your personal “mind map.” Recently Pinterest has exploded onto the social networking scene. Want to find other “pearls” put there? I expect Pearltrees to explode in use too. Pearltrees is available online and the universal app is in the App Store for free. Continue reading:

New QGIS Symbol Packages So far, QGIS does not come with many default symbols. Quite often one just needs two or three colors that go well together. That’s why I created a series of simple fill symbols based on ColorBrewer. As always, these XMLs can be imported using Style Manager. Another great addition to QGIS-resources was added this week by user aplannersguide. Like this: Like Loading... Learning Technologies / Pearltrees What is Pearltrees? Pearltrees is a social bookmarking site that allows its users to bookmark, organize, and share resources (pearls) from any computer or device with an Internet connection. Users may add their own pearls, or "pick" a pearl from someone else's pearltree to add to their own. What makes Pearltrees unique? Unlike most social bookmarking programs, Pearltree displays bookmarks in a graphic way. Each Pearltree has the look and feel of a mind map, also referred to as a concept map or graphic organizer. How can Pearltrees be used in an educational setting? The main purpose of social bookmarking is to allow users to collaborate and share "pearls of knowledge" they find on the Internet. As mentioned, Pearltrees can be used to share resources with students. Another area of great potential is the ability of students to share pearls with other students. Examples: Here is an example pearltree created for a middle school library: The root pearltree is in the center, ncmslibrary.

Forecast of Dengue Incidence Using Temperature and Rainfall Abstract Introduction An accurate early warning system to predict impending epidemics enhances the effectiveness of preventive measures against dengue fever. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a forecasting model that could predict dengue cases and provide timely early warning in Singapore. Methodology and Principal Findings We developed a time series Poisson multivariate regression model using weekly mean temperature and cumulative rainfall over the period 2000–2010. Significance We have developed a weather-based dengue forecasting model that allows warning 16 weeks in advance of dengue epidemics with high sensitivity and specificity. Author Summary Without effective drugs or a vaccine, vector control remains the only method of controlling dengue fever outbreaks in Singapore. ☆ How to import my current bookmarks and folders into Pearltrees - Quora Launch of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 results | Health Data Innovation On Thursday, 12/13/2012, The Lancet published seven papers with the results of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study 2010. The epic, 5-year study involved hundreds of collaborators to compile and analyze all available data on health outcomes globally. My role in the project focused on finding and obtaining input data, managing data at IHME, and creating visualizations. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk factors Study 2010 (GBD 2010) is arguably the most comprehensive assessment on human health ever conducted. GBD 2010 was coordinated by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) – my employer – in collaboration with 6 other organizations, the University of Queensland, Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the University of Tokyo, Imperial College London, and the World Health Organization (WHO). GBD 2010 compiled all data on health outcomes available to us.

How Much Text on Presentation Slides? - Carlisle Rainey I've been working on my presentations lately. While I've spent most of my time thinking about the content and the style of the talk itself, I've also been changing my thinking about the content of the presentation slides. Garr Reynolds, in his excellent book Presentation Zen, makes the following observation: Over the years, a primary reason so many presentations given with the aid of slides or other multimedia have failed is that the visual displays served as nothing more than containers for reams of text. According to John Sweller, who developed the cognitive load theory in the 1980s, it is more difficult to process information if it is coming at us both verbally and in written form at the same time. Since people cannot read and listen well at the same time, displays filled with lots of text must be avoided. To give some sense of how my thinking has morphed on the topic, I provide some examples of slides I've used to convey the same ideas. Notice the change.
