DIY Steampunk Gauges If you're building steampunk props for cosplay, gauges are a must-have. Unfortunately, vintage gauges (which look the most authentic) can be both hard to find and pretty darn expensive once you do track them down. So, John and I decided to make our own. Here's the secret: These cup slider handles for closet doors are perfect for DIY gauges. Once we found those, I went hunting online for photos of vintage pressure gauges. Next I needed a temperature gauge, which was much harder to track down. ...but the photo had too much glare and shadow to use. For the most realistic look, you could use clock hands or spinner arrows like these for the gauge needles. To give the faces some age and character, John rubbed brown glaze on the paper after printing them out. Next it was a simple matter of cutting them out: John: Don't show my thumb! Me: [rolling eyes] And popping them inside the frames. So instead, we opted for the easy way out and just filled them with clear epoxy:

How To Paint A Faux Copper Patina Today I'm going to show you how to take something like this: Seahorsies! And turn it into something like this: BioShock Seahorsies!! This is a great technique for transforming everything from knick-knacks to cosplay props and hardware, and it can be used to make almost any material - wood, ceramic, plastic, etc. - look like naturally aged copper. But the best part? So let's get started! First, prime your piece. (I originally planned to paint this piece gloss white, but the ceramic was rough and didn't look that great in a solid color. Next, spray your piece with the copper metallic, and let it dry completely: For this next step, have a small cup of mineral spirits and some cotton rags handy, because you'll want to move somewhat quickly once you've finished spraying your piece black. When you're ready, go ahead and spray a nice thick coat of flat black all over your piece. As soon as you're finished spraying, grab a rag and start wiping down the piece. Most of the glaze here is still wet.

Etching Tins with Salt Water and Electricity - Compliment to The Steampunk Bible Article The Steampunk Bible contains an article I wrote on etching small candy tins with salt water and electricity. There was limited space in the book so we've provided this expanded compliment article to help you should you be interested in trying this project, enjoy! In the past, merchants used sealed cans and boxes made from the metal tin for many products. Variable shipping methods, and the indeterminate time that a product might remain on the shelf, meant that a durable container made a great deal of sense. These “tins” of old had a certain utility after their contents had been eaten or otherwise consumed. In this project, I’ll show you how to turn plain toffee and mint tins into beautiful boxes suitable for display. What You Will Be Doing Cautions and Advice This process requires chemicals and heat as well as electricity and water. When using any sort of chemical, you should always read and be sure you understand all of the warnings provided by the manufacturer. Time: an hour or two

jauge Steampunk Fashion This afternoon I finished reworking the shoulder strap to my first Sam Brown belt-rig. This was the one I made for the Steampunk Indiana Jones outfit - and kept re-using for several other outfits as I came up with them. A few months ago I bought a new reproduction 1911 US Army issue belt and flap-closure holster from Sportsman's Guide Catalog for any WWI, WWII, or Indiana Jones outfits. So I felt free to re-mod my original belt-rig with a longer shoulder strap that featured more accurate "dog leash" clips to hook the strap up to the belt. This is, without a doubt, the most accurate reproduction that I've done of a Sam Brown belt-rig to date. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image. Still to be done: Getting out the leather dye and staining the shoulder strap, the tie-downs, and the light-colored ammo pouches darker, to better match the belt and holster. Materials used for the entire project: Tools used: Method: I don't have many close-up photos of the project. Vila
