Brian Sztabnik | Cell Phones in Class 10 Sep The Cell Phone Solution There was a discussion this summer on the AP Literature Facebook group about student attention in class, cell phone distraction, and the difficulty teachers were facing in getting their students to read for sustained periods of time. I’ll admit, it is a problem that has troubled me as well. My students have become sneakier and more blatant with their cell phones. They were sneakier because they would slip their phones into their hoodies or pants pocket and slip it out just enough to do a split-second check while I was teaching. They were also more blatant because some were leaving their phones on their desk face up. I didn’t want to spend my time policing phones; I wanted to teach. But because I was not tackling this problem allowed my students to prioritize their cell phones over the work at hand. The most important book that I read over the summer was Cal Newport’s Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World . His thesis is simple. Related

31 Days, 31 Lists: Day One – 2017 Great Board Books The lists begin! And as with last year we’re kicking off with the youngest of readers. This is by no means the only list you’ll find out there of best board books of 2017. However, I do like to distinguish between my age groups when I present this list. 2017 Board Books: For Babies Baby’s Big Busy Book by Karen Katz Never let them get you down, Karen Katz. Dance by Matthew Van Fleet You might question why I would put this book in the section for the earliest of readers, but I’ve always found that VanFleet is magnificent at entrancing children’s attentions at a very early age. Heads & Tails by Carli Davidson Which is not to say that Davidson’s other 2017 board book Shake, Wiggle & Roll isn’t any less brilliant. Making Faces: A First Book of Emotions by Molly Magnuson There are two things that they will tell you about early cognitive development and board books. My First Baby Signs by Phil Conigliaro, ill. Peekaboo Barn Farm Day by Nat Sims, ill. Time for Bed by Thierry Bedouet I know. Ah!

How to sing your way to language success What can songs teach us about a language? Richard Stokes, Professor of Lieder at the UK’s Royal Academy of Music , talked to Ellie Buchdahl of Education UK about teaching the wonder of language through music. How does a man who describes his own singing voice as ‘risible’ and who once taught GCSE and A-level students to ‘read lyrics, learn music and make an absolute racket’ churn out so many high-performing musicians and linguists? Musician or teacher – which are you? I am certainly not a musician. When I started my first teaching job, I was not very confident. But can caterwauling get you through your GCSEs? The more I taught through poetry and music, the more convinced I became that it worked. At 14 or 15, if you’re bright, you don’t want to be fed a diet of cartoons and feeble jokes in a book that is 250 pages long and only goes as far as the present tense. Did you find singing improved your students’ pronunciation too? Can someone who’s ‘not a singer’ teach professionals how to sing?

2017 Blue Ribbons | Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books It’s hard to identify a trend in this year’s list—the fiction collection is one of our most genre-diverse in years, with verse novels and humor, mythology and realism, fantasy and tragedy all rolled together. While we love our nonfiction list, the nonfiction boom we had for a while seems to be tailing off, so we hope to see a resurgence and tougher competition next year. And picture books—well, picture books are just an untrammeled joy, filled with love, humor, and wisdom in places expected and unexpected. You can find a trifold here.
