The School for Renewable Energy Science In addition to offering an international M.Sc. Degree Program in Renewable Energy Science, RES was committed to the following four additional programs: RESnet- The management of a network of university-led renewable energy centers in Europe and elsewhere. For further information, please visit RESnet. Steering Committee Calling all Renewable Energy Experts! 4 April 2014 The second review period for REN21’s 2014 Global Status Report will begin this Friday April 4th and will run until Wednesday April 16th. This is an open peer review process; your feedback, as well as additional information that you may have, is welcome and will help to strengthen the quality of the Global Status Report. The upcoming review round will focus on: • Global Market Overview – cross-cutting developments and trends in renewable energy in 2013 • Market & Industry Trends by Technology (including bio-energy, geothermal power & heat; hydropower; ocean energy; solar PV; CSP; solar thermal heating & cooling; and wind power). • Investment Trends • Sidebars on related topics To participate, please sign up to the REN21+ Online Review Tool at (Detailed instruction are listed below).

Towards a low-carbon future — SETIS The Information System for the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) The European Strategic Energy Technology (SET)-Plan aims to transform energy production and use in the EU with the goal of achieving EU worldwide leadership in the production of energy technological solutions capable of delivering EU 2020 and 2050 targets. The move towards a low-carbon Europe requires innovative research, effective strategic planning and an emphasis on timely and appropriate action. Masdar City > Planning and Design Image Showing Thermal Analysis Planners recognised that the biggest environmental gains come from some of the most passive, and least expensive, tools: the city’s (and buildings’) orientation (with regards to the sun and prevailing winds) and its form. Next most effective is building performance optimisation, such as an efficient envelope and systems, and smart building management. Active controls, such as renewable energy, are the most expensive, while offering the lowest relative environment-impact returns. That’s why designers first concentrated on orientation and performance optimisation, thereby reducing a large amount of energy demand with little cost, and only subsequently looked at what active controls could be implemented.

Cities, Scaling and Sustainability Organizers: Luis Bettencourt, Geoffrey West Cities, Scaling, and Sustainability SFI's Cities, Scaling, and Sustainability research effort is creating an interdisciplinary approach and quantitative synthesis of organizational and dynamical aspects of human social organizations, with an emphasis on cities. Different disciplinary perspectives are being integrated in terms of the search for similar dependences of urban indicators on population size - scaling analysis - and other variables that characterize the system as a whole. A particularly important focus of this research area is to develop theoretical insights about cities that can inform quantitative analyses of their long-term sustainability in terms of the interplay between innovation, resource appropriation, and consumption and the make up of their social and economic activity.

Iceland president on official India visit Iceland’s President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson and First Lady Dorrit Moussaieff are in India on an official state visit designed to coincide with the presentation of the Nehru Award in Delhi yesterday for his work on climate change. The President’s arrival in India was heralded with a 21-gun salute and meetings with the Indian President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The couple also laid a wreath of flowers from the Icelandic nation on the Mahatma Ghandi memorial. Economics, technology, science and energy were the main topics of conversation between the President and the Indian Prime Minister. Opencities Open Cities challenges are designed around four themes: open data, crowdsourcing, urban labs and fiber-to-the-home. The challenges are open for individuals and organizations and aim to foster the development of products and services based on the platforms provided by the participating cities. The Innovation Challenge Share your ideas and win! The Open cities project calls for developers to collaboratively brainstorm in our Open Data Forum about these two Open Data problems: >read more
