Volunteer Abroad with the International Volunteering Organization Projects Abroad Where it All Started In the early 1990s, some students wanted a break from study - a "gap year," although the term wasn't yet in common use. They approached their geography professor about traveling and working in Eastern Europe. The professor, Dr. Until 1997, Projects Abroad was a small organization with just two part time staff sending university students to teach English in Eastern Europe. Projects Abroad Today Now after over 20 years, we have offices around the world, including two North American offices located in New York City and Toronto. Projects Abroad volunteers are aged from 16 to 75! Projects Abroad in the Global Economy We help to create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Because we work with local colleagues at all levels, our extensive network of local knowledge enables us to channel the skills of our volunteers to places they are really needed. Cultural Exchange and Freedom of Choice Now we are taking this theme of "respect" further than ever.

The Global Classroom Project: Building Commmunity We’re always interested in programs that help teachers and their students connect with each other. So when I heard about the Global Classroom Project I asked Michael Graffin to write a blog post to tell us more. About the Global Classroom Project The Global Classroom Project was co-founded by Deb Frazier (@frazierde) in Ohio, USA, and Michael Graffin (@mgraffin) in Perth, Western Australia. Since its humble beginnings in April 2011, #globalclassroom has evolved under the leadership of @mgraffin into an online learning community, connecting teachers and students around the world. This is our story. When we began our 2011-12 Project, we had some goals in mind: Global Classroom Manifesto And we are succeeding beyond our wildest dreams … We now find ourselves running a global educational network involving hundreds of teachers, and thousands of students, across 32 countries and 6 continents. We’ve created a global community. This is impacting on our students too … Kids Speak 2011-12 (@frazierde)
Australian Curriculum There is great congruence between global education and the Australian Curriculum. Goals Global education aims to develop global citizens through promotion of open mindedness and a willingness to take action for change, respecting and valuing diversity, and being active in the development of a peaceful, just and sustainable world. It has much in common with the Melbourne Declaration on Education Goals for Young Australians (2008), which promotes equity and excellence, development of successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens. Approach Global education promotes flexible learning, which empowers students to learn about the world, develop values around a positive sense of self, appreciation of cultural diversity, passion for social justice and human rights and building sustainable futures. Skills Critical and creative thinking Ethical behaviour Personal and social competence Intercultural understanding. Perspectives
Pe' Sla: The Heart Of All That Is: Help Save the Lakota Heart Land! Pe' Sla is an area in the Black Hills of South Dakota (just west of Rapid City) that is considered by the Lakota people to be the Center and heart of everything that is. It is part of our creation story. It is a sacred place. We perform certain ceremonies at Pe' Sla which sustain the Lakota way of life and keep the universe in harmony. This area is partly owned by the Reynolds family. We are hoping to buy as much of the sacred sites as possible. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe has designated $50,000 for the purpose of purchasing Pe' Sla land.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world, Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people, Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law, Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations, Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, Article 1. AboutUs Global Citizen is a tool to amplify and unite a generation’s call for justice. It’s a place for you to learn and act, to bring an end to extreme poverty. Global Citizens know that a world that deprives 1.2 billion people of their basic rights and opportunities is unjust and unacceptable. We celebrate the efforts made to cut extreme poverty by half, but recognise more still needs to be done. We know that people living in extreme poverty are working hard themselves, and that we need to learn and take action to change the rules that trap them in broken systems. We use Global Citizen to learn more about issues, so we can take effective action for change and find opportunities to support campaigns and organisations creating sustainable change. There are more than 250,000 Global Citizens already taking action around the world - we hope that you join us. What is a Global Citizen? The fight for justice has never been easy. We don't ask for charity, we ask for justice. Who's behind it?
Global Citizen Photo Story: Where are you from? | Intercultural Education in K-12 Classrooms “I am from there, I am from here, but I am neither there nor here.I have two names which meet and part.I have two languages, but I have long forgottenwhich is the language of my dreams.” ― Mahmoud Darwish No matter where we are in the world people will always ask this question, where are you from? What would your initial response be? I try to avoid this question at all costs when I first meet someone. I never know what to say. In fact, my answer routinely changes depending on the circumstances, where I am at the time, and who is asking. This Photo Story is geared towards students in Grade 7. 21 Map Creation Tools for Students and Teachers Yesterday, I published a review of MapFab which is a fabulous, free, and simple tool for creating maps online. Writing that post got me thinking about all of the other free map creation tools that I've reviewed over the years. Google Maps and Google Earth are my favorite tools for creating maps, but not every school allows teachers and students to download it. And creating Google Maps does require you to have a Google account which is an obstacle to use in some schools too. In the list below you will find some map creation tools that don't require registration. Animaps is a service that was built for the purpose of allowing users to create animated Google Maps. Tripline is a service designed to enable anyone to record a trip they've taken or to plan a trip itinerary. Build A Map is a service that allows you to build layers on top of Google Maps. Scribble Maps is a fun and useful application for drawing and typing on Google Maps.
