NZ wins free trade first with Russia Last updated 05:00 01/06/2010 New Zealand has scored a trade coup by becoming the first country to start negotiating a free trade deal with Russia. While the Russian market is currently small for New Zealand – around $200 million a year – the potential is seen as huge by our trade negotiators. However, they warn it could be two or more years before the talks yield a result. Trade Negotiations Minister Tim Groser spearheaded the effort to put New Zealand at the top of Russia's list for a free trade agreement. The talks will also include discussions around extending free trade to Belarus and Kazakhstan. A free trade deal would be a first for Russia, which is not yet a member of the World Trade Organisation. The outgoing tourism market is growing – around 11 million Russians holiday in other countries each year, but less than 1 per cent of them come to New Zealand. Most of what New Zealand exports to Russia is agricultural produce and New Zealand goods currently face stiff trade barriers.

Happiness Is Earning $60,000 A Year? My Money Blog Nobel laureate and founder of behavioral economics Daniel Kahneman performed a TED Talk this year about how as humans our “experiencing selves” and our “remembering selves” perceive happiness differently. Basically, he says that our memories of experiences differ from what really happened during the experience itself. But what ended up being the catchy soundbite was in the Q&A session after his talk, where he tells us that while millions of dollars won’t buy you happiness, a job that pays $60,000 a year might help. This is based on a survey of 600,000 Americans: “Below 60,000 dollars a year, people are unhappy, and they get progressively unhappier the poorer they get. “Clearly… money does not buy you experiential happiness, but lack of money certainly buys you misery,” he said. Kiwi cities rank among world's best Auckland has the world's fourth-best quality of living, according to a new ranking dominated by European cities. But in another ranking for eco-cities, Wellington beats out Auckland, ranking fifth worldwide. In both categories, New Zealand cities sit at the top of the Asia Pacific, ahead of Australian contenders. The 2010 Mercer Worldwide Quality of Living Survey was released today, ranking cities for overall quality of living based on political, socio-economic and environmental criteria as well as sanitisation, education and transport. The company also compiled a list of top eco-cities. Spokeswoman Georgina Harley said in a statement to media that New Zealand cities had been recognised for having "quality housing close to the city", "political stability" and "transport". Ms Harley also praised New Zealand cities' "wide selection of restaurants". Auckland ranked fourth while Wellington was judged 12th worldwide for quality of living.
