As the Chief Designer of Behance, few people are better at identifying a great online portfolio than Matias Corea. While judging contests, looking for new talent, and conducting design research for Behance, he has reviewed thousands of creative portfolios on the web.To get some insight on what works (and what doesn’t!) when it comes to showcasing creative work online, I chatted with Matias about his observations and extracted six simple tips for building a knockout creative portfolio:1. Take a step back, and curate your best work. Take the time to look at all of your work and carefully choose the right pieces for your portfolio. Typographic Design Patterns and Best Practices - Smashing Magazine Advertisement Even with a relatively limited set of options in CSS, typography can vary tremendously using pure CSS syntax. Serif or sans-serif? Large or small font? Line height, spacing, font size and padding… The list goes on and on. To find typographic design patterns that are common in modern Web design and to resolve some common typographic issues, we conducted extensive research on 50 popular websites on which typography matters more than usual (or at least should matter more than usual). We’ve carefully analyzed their typography and style sheets and searched for similarities and differences. Ultimately, we identified 13 general typographic problems and issues related to typographic design and tried to find answers to them through our research: How popular are serif and sans-serif typefaces in body copy and headlines? Then, at the end, I thought I would show the video for the first time – give a pre-screening to those in the meeting. Publish What You Learn Advertisement I don’t think anyone can deny that the Web has changed the way people teach, learn, and do research. Of course, this doesn’t mean that everything we read online is true and accurate—far from it. In the final week of November 2011, a smart group of developers1 launched a project called Move The Web Forward2, which you can read more about in Addy Osmani’s Smashing Magazine article3. For this post, I want to focus on one piece of advice given by those developers in that project, under the heading “Write4”. The advice is: Publish what you learn. As soon as I read that exhortation (which originated with this tweet5), I knew this was a project made by a group of people who cared about the Web and that they understand what it takes to move forward as developers, and as an industry. One way that I have introduced graduate students to visual grammar is through an engagement with shapes that Molly Bang outlines in her fabulous book, Picture This. The process I am outlining via this slideshare has been used by middle and secondary teachers very successfully with their students. Playing with shapes in order to (re)tell a story or illustrate a phrase helps learners to internalize Bang's 10 insights about how shape influences the way we feel. How to Prevent a Web Design Shelf Life The main thing I try my best to do, but nearly always struggle to do, is make my websites have longevity so that say in a year or two they don’t look out of date and well a bit pants. This I think is the biggest thing when it comes to partial mental breakdowns when developing a website for me, as sometimes even by the time I have finished designing it and then put it into code, it looks out of date and some what amateur. With the trends in website changing on an almost bi-monthly basis at the moment with the integration of the newer techniques when you are designing a website it is almost certain to look out of date within the year if you are not careful! I’m not saying that you should build a website where it will look the same forever as this well just isn’t realistic, tastes change, people change its normal. In my opinion pairing fonts is one of the most difficult parts of the design process. If you have no idea where to begin, then this article will guide you through the knowledge you need for now. Browsing the internet for tips about pairing fonts can get confusing, because there are many practices designers use. Therefore I researched a lot in the past couple of weeks and I will present you what is, in my opinion, the right way of doing this. The question I get asked the most is “how many fonts should I use?” However, even if I usually say two, there are no rules that say how many different fonts you can use. Another question is “to buy or not to buy?”. Kerning may not be perfect in free fonts, because font developers do not put as much work into it – and why would they, as long as it’s for free and they don’t get anything out of it?
