I Keep a Writer's Notebook alongside my Students. Do you? To my dear students and their wonderful parents, All students will maintain a writer's notebook for my class. Every day, we will write in it. Whether it's a composition book, a spiral notebook, or something leather-bound and fancier, when students enter my class, the first tool that finds their desktops is their writer's notebooks. I have baskets where students can safely store them after class, or they can choose to keep them with them, which many of my students do. The worst thing that can happen in my classroom is to lose one's writer's notebook, because that's where all of our thinking and pre-writing is stored, and to lose those thoughts and ideas will mean that student cannot truly participate when we work on our writing during our class workshops on writing.

Thinking about writing journals? I'm starting to plan for my 6th year as a 7th grade reading/writing teacher at Chicago-area middle school, and I wanted to "think out loud" about writing journals/notebooks and their use in the middle-school language arts classroom. There are several schools of thought on this, and a lot of powerful ways to use these things, as well as several possible ways to handle the logistics. Here are some ways that I've used journals (let's just call them that for now) in the LA classroom: As a daily "Do Now" or immediate activity done at the very start of class. Teaching English: I have seen the writing on the wall! This activity was inspired by a photo dear Nora Touparlaki uploaded on her Facebook account and it immediately struck me as a great creative writing activity. All you need is a washable pen which also writes on the wall or in case that's not an option some construction paper or card stock. The idea is simple, you ask your students to write a story but instead of drawing the story setting on a piece of paper, you transfer the action on the wall. Flowcharts And Song Lyrics An unlikely pairing? I thought so too. Until I saw this today in a posting out in the uber-world that is Facebook. People of a not-quite-certain age will recognize it as the flow chart that outlines the words to a song from back in 1980. The funny thing is how absolutely creative people can me on such short notice. Seriously.
