Faux Tin Tiles Tutorial

Faux Tin Tiles Tutorial
Recycled crafts are one of my specialties. Embossing disposable cookie sheets is an easy technique and creates amazing art. Beautiful faux tin tiles! Want to know how? This is my second recycled craft idea using disposable cookie sheets!. For this project I used: 2 disposable aluminum cookie sheetsFree patterns from my pattern page* A knitting needle Paintbrush Various metallic acrylic paintsSpray primer A cork bulletin board Thumb tacks Are you new to the Sitcom? Begin by measuring out and cutting (3 ea.) 7″ squares from each cookie sheet. Use the scissors to clip a notch in each corner. I then drew out some patterns on paper. Here the metal tile is shown with the pattern scored into it. Once the piece is indented to your satisfaction, it is time to paint it. Once all the indentions were painted, I added a base color to the raised areas. I used the same color scheme for each tile, so that they all worked together. There are many ways to display your finished tiles. Signing you up!

Hedgehog Pincushion Instruction The body is shaped out of PU foam. I don't have a pattern for this, it is free-style sculpting. Aim for a size that fits the palm of your hand. To start I used a rectangular piece of foam. 1. TIP: the fluffier the fleece the better. Baking Soda Clay Here's another homemade modeling compound that good for both kids and adult artisans. Compared to the homemade polymer clay I presented a few weeks ago, it's non-elastic when wet and much "softer" when dry---that is, easy to sand smooth or to reshape, to add etchings, and possibly even to carve (I haven't tried). I've used it to make a variety of small items, particularly small bowls and candle holders (shown below in order of finished-ness). Sanded nice and smooth! Materials 1 cup corn starch2 cups baking soda1.25 cups cold waterNon-stick potWooden spoonMed-large bowl (not pictured)Damp cloth, lid or plate (not pictured) Steps Combine ingredients in pot and stir until smooth. Cook over low-medium flame, stirring constantly, until the mixture resembles mashed potatoes. Remove from heat and let cool in a separate container either covered with a damp towel or mostly covered with a plate or lid. Sculpt. Allow to dry, about 2 days depending on the size and thickness of your finished piece. Enjoy!

STITCHED by Crystal: Tutorial: Bunny Rag Doll with Free Pattern I have been wanting to make my daughter a doll for a while. It was on my list of things to make before Christmas but I never got around to it. We were out shopping for little gifts for their Easter baskets last night and I thought a bunny rag doll would be perfect! Enter this little gal.... Are you looking for a quick project for your little ones Easter basket? I love seeing things I dream up come to life. I love her giant bunny feet! To make a bunny, you need:Some fabric, this is a great pattern to use up some scraps.Poly-filEmbroidery threadSewing machineNeedle and threadThe pattern found HERE First use the pattern to cut out your pieces (you probably noticed your feet look a bit different than the ones pictured, I didn't like the way they looked at first, you will notice them change about half way through) Sew your ears, arms and legs right sides together. Trim off the tips of the ears and snip inside of the curve on the feet close to the seam. Turn them right side out.

Backlit Canvas Art Do you have one project that you've been longing to do, but just haven't found the time yet? This is it for me. I call it my Backlit Canvas Art and the inspiration piece has been pinned in my "Crafts to try" Pinterest board for ages. My "pin"speration is an artist's piece made from metal that has hand cut flowers all over it. So I decided to give it a go and create my version. There are two main differences between the two: 1. 2. The idea of the canvas is that during the day (ie. with the Christmas light off) you have a beautiful sculpture while at night (you guessed it, with the Christmas lights on!) How about a tutorial? Supply list Mounted canvas (mine is 10"x10") cardstock to fit on your canvas (mine is 12"x12") stamps ink pad X-acto knife light source* *I wasn't sure if I wanted to use a single bulb or Christmas lights so that is why both are in the above picture. I decided to go with the same flower theme as my inspiration piece. I randomly stamped various flowers across my cardstock.

I guess About Me is a more aptly named title! I suppose it is about time I fill in this page, nearly a year after it arrived on my header! The main reason that is has been a vacant spot for so long is that it kind of feels like a weird first day of school assignment to write the obligatory "About Me" essay, specially at my age. What age would that be exactly? my little buddy. Some popular adjectives I use to describe myself are busy, creative, outgoing, ambitious, friendly and smart. You may notice that things change regularly around our house, and the main reason for that is that I used to own and run a local furniture refurbishing business named WhiteBerry Reinvented. So where exactly is home? Our humble, evolving abode. In the end this blog was started to chronicle our adventures into parenthood but has developed into an assorted mix of decor, clothing, the occasional recipe and snippets of daily life. And that is the long and short of it my friends! As always, enjoy whatever it is you are doing ...in the fun lane. Holly

Once Upon A Blog...: When You Wish Upon A Character... (How Design in Disney Movies Affects the Way Fairy Tales Are Perceived & Why We Should Care) Note: This post is very image heavy and I've had a devil of a time trying to get the images to stick where I put them. As I'm now out of time, I want to apologize in advance if there are any weird formatting issues through the post! For me, I know I just have to catch a glimpse of certain H.J. Disney images, however, aren't as subtle as sitting in a book waiting for us to open it again. What is the pop culture impression and what's missing? It's one of the reasons I think it's important for concept art to get out there - to show people what could have been and, if the information is available, why these alternate/early designs were created in the first place and why they were ultimately replaced with something else. Take any of the early designs here: imagine, if you will, how a story would have been different if you saw these characters playing the parts of their respective fairy tale. What about you?

How To Paint Particleboard / Laminate Furniture Remember these sturdy Broyhill bookcases I got on Craigslist for our schoolroom? Well, they were hiding a little secret.... While the front and the drawers were made out of real wood, the sides, shelves and backs were made out of what I like to call the fake stuff. Yup, there was particleboard all over the place! I decided that painting those babies white and putting them on either side of the window was just the thing to do. Here they are after eight months of daily use, nary a scratch to be seen.... I was so impressed that I recently painted our dining room table using the same process even though it is made out of solid wood. Before After Here is the scoop on how I did it: First I cleaned the bookcases thoroughly with a damp cloth. This oil based primer is key! This primer dries quickly, in about 2 hours, but I waited 12 hours between coats as a precaution. After the paint was fully cured I applied two coats of Varathane Floor Finish, waiting about 12 hours between coats. to this...
