Designing Interactions Interviews with Terry Winograd, Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google, Steve Rogers, and Mark Podlaseck Professor Terry Winograd teaches computer science at Stanford. He was advisor to Larry Page when Larry and Sergey Brin were developing their first prototypes, before they founded Google. Steve Rogers is head of production at BBC New Media. Mark Podlaseck, who researches the navigation of large databases at IBM, describes the rationale behind his beautiful design for the glassengine, a Web site that allows you to browse the music of Philip Glass.

Dark Mountain Project Image credit: The Dark Mountain Project I'll make no attempt to deny it. I am both an optimist, and a deeply impractical person. I suspect that's why I've always had a hard time accepting the darker visions for the future offered by peak oilers like Oily Cassandra, or the ever thought-provoking James Kunstler. "Those who witness extreme social collapse at first hand seldom describe any deep revelation about the truths of human existence. As Kingsnorth explains in a piece about the origins of the Dark Mountain Project over at the Guardian, that manifesto touched a nerve. Undoubtedly, with IEA insiders warning of inflated oil stats, and the US military warning of huge oil shortages by 2015, Dark Mountain and others are right to be ringing alarm bells. It's true that it will be almost impossible to run our society as it runs now without cheap oil—but why the heck would we want to do that anyway? Yes it's going to cause major disruption.

Google Brings Museums To Mobile Users, Armchair Travelers With New Technology Platform Google announced today it’s making a platform available to museums that enables them to build mobile applications that take advantage of Google technology, including Street View and YouTube, to bring their exhibits to anyone with a smartphone. Through partnerships between museums worldwide and the Google Cultural Institute, there are now 11 museums and cultural institutions that have participated in this pilot project to date; their apps are live now on Google Play. The early adopters of this new software platform include museums and institutions in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Nigeria, such as the Museum of Arts et Métiers, MAO, GAM, Palazzo Madama, Musee Curie, Museum of Le Havre, Monnaie de Paris, MAGA, Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, and the Pan-Atlantic University app, to name a few. The newer mobile tools are an extension of that latter effort, as they also take advantage of Google’s “indoor” Street View technology to offer 360 degree tours. P.S.

Terms of Service; Didn't Read 50 Beautiful Clean and Simple Web Designs When it comes to web design, my experience demonstrates to me that it’s easier to add to a design rather than to take away from it. The challenge with minimalist layouts lies in the conundrum of making something beautiful with basic design elements —and with as few of them as possible. Lately, I’ve been attracted to simple and clean designs. Design Instruct is a testament to my affinity towards creating designs that present the idea of "less is more." In this collection are masterfully created minimalist designs for your inspiration in your current and future work. This is a follow up of a collection called 40 Beautiful Examples of Minimalism in Web Design published last year.

Op-ed: CO2 Atmospheric CO2 is approaching 400 parts per million for the first time in about 15 million years. That's more than a 40 percent increase since the 19th century. It's currently increasing at least 10 times faster than during the previous record high, which by strange coincidence was set right before the end-Permian extinction, 250 million years ago. A mountain of evidence has convinced the overwhelming majority of scientists that our skyrocketing CO2 emissions have very likely caused most of the global warming since 1950. What does this mean for Southern California? The National Academies recently projected about 1 to 5 feet of sea level rise along the Southern California coast by 2100. The increased chance of extreme heat waves increases drought severity and frequency, such as those in 2005 and 2010 in the Amazon, and 2011 in Texas and the Midwest. Heat waves, droughts and wildfires will be more severe in continental interiors, such as during the 2010 Russian wheat crisis.
