New evidence confirms that, in humans, its timing reflects intelligence. People with higher IQs (intelligence quotients) tend to be more active nocturnally, going to bed later, whereas those with lower IQs usually retire to bed sooner after nightfall. The precise function of sleep is arguable. According to Juliette Faraco of Stanford University, sleep loss generates a proportionate need for "sleep rebound". One of the most controversial and significant recent findings is the correlation in humans between the earliness/lateness of sleep preferences and intelligence. Robert Bolizs at Semmelweist University, and his coworkers, have shown that encephalograms during sleep illustrate how sleep elements are directly related to "wakeful cognitive performance." People with higher IQs are more apt to be nocturnal night-owls.

Satoshi Kanazawa et ses collègues de la London School of Economics (LSE) ont mis à jour des différences significatives dans les préférences de timing du sommeil entre les individus en fonction de leur QI. Quelle est la recette du succès d'une chanson? Sa mélodie enchanteresse ou impossible à oublier, ses paroles faciles à retenir ou marquantes, la voix si particulière de son interprète, ou encore son rythme entraînant? Rien de tout cela, ce qui fait vendre, c'est le sexe. Deux psychologues américains ont étudié de près les chansons de pop, country et R&B qui se sont élevées jusqu'au top 10 de Billboard Magazine en 2009, pour comprendre ce qui faisait leur succès. 92% of Top Ten Billboard Songs Are About Sex - Entertainment
Get your heads out of the gutters, America's musicians. We always knew that with all your nipple-showing and lesbian-kissing and crotch-grabbing that you're obsessed with sex, and today we have the science to back it up: "Approximately 92% of the 174 songs that made it into the [Billboard] Top 10 in 2009 contained reproductive messages," says SUNY Albany psychology professor Dawn R. Hobbs in Evolutionary Psychology. Those 174 top-selling songs were analyzed in order to determine how many sexy messages they contained in any of 18 sexy categories, including "arousal," "sexual prowess," and "genitalia." He also discovered that sex sells: "further analyses showed that the bestselling songs in all three charts featured significantly more reproductive messages than those that failed to make it into the Top Ten," the report says.

La nouvelle tragique est tombée à 2h15 la nuit du 12 janvier 2013 : l'activiste et informaticien Aaron Swartz s'est suicidé. Les raisons de son geste restent pour l'instant enveloppées de mystère. Mais certaines voix s'élèvent déjà pour mettre en relation son suicide avec l'action en justice que le Procureur des Etats Unis lui avait intentée en 2011. Les faits contestés? Avoir téléchargé via un serveur MIT et mis à disposition en ligne presque 5 millions d'articles scientifiques commercialisés par le portail scientifique JSTOR. Acte de piratage éditorial ou démarche radicale de libération des fruits de la recherche, cette affaire aurait pu coûter 35 ans de prison à Swartz. "Aaron... was one of our very best. Personnellement, je ne sais pas si l'on peut faire d'Aaron Swartz le "martyr" d'une lutte pour la libération des biens communs de l'intellect humain du joug commercial.

Aaron accomplished some incredible things in his life. The post-Reddit era in Aaron's life was really his coming of age. Instead, they threw the book at him.
Aaron Swartz's family condemns MIT and US government after his death | Technology
The family of celebrated internet activist Aaron Swartz has accused prosecutors and MIT officials of being complicit in his death, blaming the apparent suicide on the pursuit of a young man over "an alleged crime that had no victims". In a statement released late Saturday, Swartz's parents, Robert and Susan, siblings Noah and Ben and partner Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman said the Reddit builder's demise was not just a "personal tragedy" but "the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach". They also attacked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for not supporting the internet activist in his legal battles and refusing to stand up for "its own community's most cherished principles". The comments came a day after the 26-year-old killed himself in his Brooklyn apartment on Friday night. News of his death resulted in an outpouring of tributes over the internet. The trial was due to begin next month.
