Ways to Evaluate Educational Apps I am conducting a series of workshops in Florida and was asked to share a rubric to help teachers evaluate educational apps as part of the workshop. In 2010 Harry Walker developed a rubric, and I used his rubric (with some modifications by Kathy Schrock) as the basis for mine. (Read Harry Walker's paper Evaluating the Effectiveness of Apps for Mobile Devices.) I kept in mind that some apps are used to practice a discrete skill or present information just one time. My rubric also emphasizes the ability to customize content or settings and how the app encourages the use of higher order thinking skills. It is widely believed that iPad has started tranforming the face of education and revolutionizng modes of learning. Results coming out of pilot studies on the integration of iPads in the classroom seem to be promising. Reed College, for instance, took the Apple iPad for a spin in 2010 and was pleased with the tablets performance as an educational tool. Differentiator - free web app to help teachers differentiate using Blooms Taxonomy The Differentiator is a simple web app that helps you create objectives based on Bloom's Taxonomy. You simple click on the thinking skill, content, resources, product, or group tabs and then select what you want the student to do by clicking on the sub categories. For example, on the Thinking Skill tab, you can chose Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, or Creating and then a sub-term. Product tab has visual, multi-media, oral, written, and construct tabs as what the student would create as a product to demonstrate their learning. I think this is a great tool to help teachers come up with different objectives and some different activities for students to do in class.
