In fact, we're sometimes the polar opposite, a breed known as Messy Deskers. For some people, having everything out and visible just works. These tips are for our fellow messy deskers, who may be looking for a similar buoy of cleanliness amid the paper ocean currently atop their workspace. 1. How many times have you tucked something in a drawer, "just in case" you'd need it at a later date? In this age of digital photography, portable bookmarks and cloud storage, there's no real reason to keep non-essential paperwork, and for paper pilers like us, that can mean a lot of desktop real estate. For example, instead of printing and filing an article or document in a drawer, why not drop the file into a service like Evernote or Dropbox? 2. Let's call this one "rising above the mess." 3. Our tips: 4. You may be asking, If I'll never have a super-tidy desk, why bother at all?

The goal of the following collection is to provide a shortcut to twenty tutorials that are worth your time. Keep exploring, though, and let me know about others that you have enjoyed! This roundup starts with the beautiful interesting stuff. If the first tutorials are over your head, however, skip down to number sixteen for some basic photo editing techniques that should be in anyone’s bag of tricks. My first reaction to any image that I admire is: “I can’t make that.” The image-in-smoke effect is another effect that was out of my league. Why is such a simple effect put down as number three? I’ll be honest. Simple to do, impressive to look at. Grunge. Graffiti is art. This looks good.

How To Fix Dents in Wooden Floors & Furniture (With an Iron!) Many years ago a teacher told me that you could steam out a dent in a piece of wood (one where the wood fibers had been compressed, not a where they had been removed) using a wet rag and an iron. This technique was meant for unfinished wood, but unfortunately, most of the wood we deal with in our homes has some sort of finish on it. With some research I learned that this technique can work with finished wood but it depends greatly on the type of finish you are dealing with. So I decided to do a couple of tests to see the results for myself. The first test was a on a birch table from IKEA. Here is what I did: 1. The dent came up almost completely and there was no damage to the finish! My second test was on our hardwood floors. Although the dent came up, the surface of the finish had been broken and some dirt had gotten in side the cracks. In the spirit of this experiment I tried sanding and got most of it out. Has anyone else given this method a try? (Images: Natalie Espinosa)

Vitsœ | Good design Back in the early 1980s, Dieter Rams was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him – “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises.” Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design? As good design cannot be measured in a finite way he set about expressing the ten most important principles for what he considered was good design. (Sometimes they are referred as the ‘Ten commandments’.) Here they are. Good design is innovative The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Good design makes a product useful A product is bought to be used. Good design is aesthetic The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. Good design makes a product understandable It clarifies the product’s structure. Good design is unobtrusive Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools.

Increase your productivity with these email management tips - Memphis Business Journal Today, there are so many methods of electronic communication available to computer users, but in the Corporate World, email is still king. The prevalence of email at work presents several challenges in trying to remain productive. Oftentimes, it seems like we are faced with email messages coming in almost every minute. In my line of work, I have observed many who use their inboxes like huge filing cabinets sometimes containing thousands of messages with no structure. Many email productivity guidelines are available via periodical articles or online, such as “Getting Things Done” by David Allen. One primary goal for email management is to always ensure that there is an empty inbox at the end of each business day. So one may ask “How do you empty your inbox but still keep track of all of the things you need to do?” First, create three to four “top level” folders, or folders that are organized toward the top of your folder list in Outlook, Apple Mail, Gmail or other software. • Action
