4 Lessons The Classroom Can Learn From The Design Studio Earlier this year, we peered into the work spaces of some of the most inspiring companies working in the creative economy to glean design ideas for learning spaces. Instead of the tyranny of cubes and boardrooms, we found spaces for serious play, dynamic cross-pollination, and cultivated serendipity. It was easy to find inspiration from the Googles, Pixars, and IDEOs of the world; the grass is always greener. In his interview with the Carnegie Foundation, John Seely Brown, scholar and co-author of A New Culture of Learning, suggests that we look for education lessons in the architectural studio. So let’s examine the architectural studio--where we design the places in which we learn, live, heal, and work--to find out what the classroom can learn from these creative environments. 1. From the everyday “Hey, can you take a look at this?” Classrooms, in contrast, typically only display completed assignments like final book reports and dioramas; seldom is the evolution of a concept evident.

How Many Pixels Do I Need?   Daystar Page 1 of 1. Version 1.2, © 2005, 2008 by Dale Cotton, all rights reserved. This is one of the most common questions on photography forums. If you are thinking of buying, for example, an 8 megapixel digital camera, you want to know how large a print you can expect to be able to produce from its image files. Unfortunately, we can't simply say 8x10" or 16x20" or any such single answer. Assuming an excellent lens and flawless technique, maximum print size still varies enormously depending on your subject matter and how close you are to your subject. Pixels per inch is an essential concept for this discussion. Consider the following close-up portrait: Fig. 1: Lanner Falcon (Toronto Zoo) A 6 mp image like this can be enlarged almost indefinitely. Now consider the opposite extreme: Fig. 2: 05-1923, Appleview Rd In this 6 mp picture the fine detail of the tree branches and houses needs to have absolutely crisp edges. This translates to: In inches: In centimeters:

'The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas' by Gertrude Stein | All-TIME 100 Nonfiction Books Writing her lover’s “autobiography” proved a witty way for American author Gertrude Stein to detail her own life as Parisian writer, salon host and arts patron. Ostensibly, readers can take in the book, published in 1933, as Stein writing about Alice B. Toklas (which is what the title suggests) or as Toklas “writing” about Stein (which is what the book actually is). Either way, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas was groundbreaking in its experimentation with form: an autobiography written by another person. Next Black Boy

ThingLink Blog | Get creative with your images Bomb suit A bomb suit or a blast suit is a heavy suit of body armor designed to withstand the pressure released from a bomb and any projectiles the bomb may produce. It is usually worn by trained personnel attempting bomb disposal . In contrast to ballistic body armors , which usually focus on protecting the torso and head, a bomb suit must protect all parts of the body, since the dangers posed by a bomb's explosion affect the entire body. Current designs that are effective are generally very heavy, bulky and difficult to maneuver in. These drawbacks make it unsuitable for regular use in combat situations. Parts of the bomb suit overlap for maximum protection. In order to maximize precision, bomb suits lack gloves. EOD technicians wear bomb suits during reconnaissance, 'render safe' or disruption procedures on potential or confirmed explosive threats. Ready to Collect Pyrex? References, Resources, and Fun Stuff — Pyrex Pleasures There's no better time to start collecting Pyrex and vintage kitchenware than the present. After all, neither you nor the dishes are getting any younger! But where do you begin? Guides like Michael Barber's Pyrex Passion series offer boatloads of information, but even he concedes that the ever-increasing demanad for vintage Pyrex items makes the market more unpredictable than the NASDAQ. "People always want to know the resale value," says Barber, but even the published guides can't keep up with the constant shifts in the marketplace. The days of scoring a Lucky in Love casserole — the pattern that trumps all others in the rare Pyrex sweepstakes — at an out-of-the-way antique shop may be long gone, but reasonably priced items, from small lidded refrigerator dishes to cake pans to citrus-stamped glass pitchers, can still be found on Etsy and eBay if you're willing to comb through the listings.
