A Perfect Personal Data Collection Application The number of Web applications to collect data and information about yourself continues to grow; if you want to track something, most likely there's an online tool to do it. This is great - especially since a lot of the applications seem to have a lot of users, which means an interest in data. Whether it is deliberate or not is a different question, but you know, that doesn't really matter. But all the self-surveillance tools so far are mostly about a single dataset or two at most. Process It and Find Information There's no need for me to go over all the personal tools available online again, but they all share a common theme. It's the show-it-all approach. Digital Self in a Physical World Okay, more data processing. There's still the tough part of remembering to send data over to the servers. I don't know if we'll ever get rid of that stigma, but I look at Facebook and Twitter as my glimmers of hope. Facebook in particular has managed to intertwine itself with real life.

Who Will Google Buy Next for Structured Data? Google made a significant strategic shift last week when it said it would spend $700 million to buy ITA Software and its flight information business. Google had previously stayed away from vertical search when possible, but now it will be smack in the middle of the travel vertical: ITA is estimated to be involved in about 50 percent of U.S. airfare searches, including those on Bing and Kayak. Google usually prefers “general tools for search,” Google VP Marissa Mayer said on a conference call about the ITA deal. But at times, “to provide the best user experience and most relevant results we need to have a special set of data and/or a vertical interface to really express what [users are] looking for” — and that’s true in air travel where user queries about dates and locations are particularly complicated, she said. The world of online travel, according to Google So what about other search verticals? I asked Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman for his thoughts.

State Department shifts digital resources to social media - The Hill's Hillicon Valley With little fanfare, the State Department has abandoned America.gov — an ambitious digital project launched three years ago to promote Democracy abroad — and shifted its resources to social media projects. A message on the front page of America.gov informs visitors that, as of March 31, the site is not being updated and will be archived. A notice directs visitors seeking information on U.S. foreign policy to the U.S. embassy and consulate websites or to State.gov. The manpower once devoted to the site, provided through the State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP), is being redirected toward the department’s “social media assets,” which use Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Although MacInnes said the department’s official site of record, State.gov, would still serve as a resource, a “static website” like America.gov is no longer the best way to promote understanding of policy. “We’re teaching people to write shorter,” MacInnes said.

Editorial :Assessing assessment Extraits : "Many researchers say that, in principle, they welcome the use of quantitative performance metrics because of the potential for clarity and objectivity. Yet they also worry that the hiring, promotion and tenure committees that control their fate will ignore crucial but hard-to-quantify aspects of scientific performance such as mentorship and collaboration building, and instead focus exclusively on a handful of easy-to-measure numbers related mostly to their publication and citation rates. (...) Academic administrators, conversely, need to understand what the various metrics can and cannot tell them. Metrics : Do metrics matter ? Extrait : "For all their popularity, however, citation-based metrics share some fundamental weaknesses when it comes to evaluating individual researchers. Another weakness is that the scores depend on the database being used.

Home - Me-trics What is The Quantified Self? With our first Quantified Self conference coming up, many people are learning about the Quantified Self for the first time. (Welcome, newcomers!) Here, I’ll give some of the history of the Quantified Self, with a focus on why we’re organized the way we are, and some ideas about how you can get the most out of the various things we do. I’ll also describe what we’ve got planned with a focus on the upcoming conference. This is the first in a series: Later posts will take up specific conference themes, and many different people will be contributing. Kevin Kelly and I founded The Quantified Self in 2007. In 2007 we began looking at some new practices that seemed, loosely, to belong together: life logging, personal genomics, location tracking, biometrics. Some things about QS were thoughtfully considered, but the most important thing was serendipitous. Right now we are focused on the conference coming up, with much work going on behind the scenes.

Web Interview With Tim Berners-Lee, Part 2: Search Engines, User Interfaces for Data, Wolfram Alpha, And More... In part 2 of my one-on-one interview with Tim Berners-Lee, we explore a variety of topics relating to Linked Data and the Semantic Web. If you missed it, in Part 1 of the interview we covered the emergence of Linked Data and how it is being used now even by governments. In Part 2 we discuss: how previously reticent search engines like Google and Yahoo have begun to participate in the Semantic Web in 2009, user interfaces for browsing and using data, what Tim Berners-Lee thinks of new computational engine Wolfram Alpha, how e-commerce vendors are moving into the Linked Data world, and finally how the Internet of Things intersects with the Semantic Web. Semantic Web and Search Engines Like Google, Yahoo RWW: You've been talking about the Semantic Web for many years now. TBL: Not really, but the takeup by the search engines is interesting. "The search engines have not been keen on the Semantic Web [...] their business is making order out of chaos, and they're actually happy with the chaos."
