Janet O'Neal - 2D Mixed Media
It’s been quite awhile since I’ve posted ANYTHING about laundry! I’m going through withdrawals! :-) I’m one of those strange people who likes laundry. And one of the things I like MOST about it…is the sense of accomplishment when something dirty comes out CLEAN. I guess I also like the “challenge” aspect of it as well. So when I came across this “recipe” for whitening whites in the comments section of a post at Homemade Mamas, I knew I had to try it. Katie JoMar commented: HOT HOT HOT water1 cup of laundry detergent1 cup powdered dish washer detergent1 cup bleach1/2 cup borax After filling the washing machine with HOT water….I also dumped in a large-sized pot of water I had brought to a boil on the stove. Another thing to remember is to add the above ingredients to as small a load size as possible. Let soak for as long as you can stand it! This is what the mattress pad looked like before “treatment”. Notice how dingy the top side of the mattress pad is compared to the SIDES of the pad.

Brand Name Laundry Detergent’s "Last Stand" This post is brought to you by Amazon where you can get deals on household cleaners! So a couple of weeks ago I had HAD it! I was FED UP! I could not bring myself to buy ONE MORE bottle of over-priced, wastefully-packaged laundry detergent. I just couldn’t do it! Now, I’m no eco-nazi (far from it), but buying those big bottles of laundry detergent, lugging them home and then turning around and throwing them away was definitely starting to get to me. Not to mention the COST! It was about this same time that I just happened to come across a picture someone posted on Pinterest.com of their “Homemade” laundry detergent! The first batch I made…I followed this recipe from The Rachel Berry Blog. Liquid Laundry Soap-Family Sized Batch 1 bar grated Fels Naptha soap 5 gallon bucket 1 cup washing soda (Again, Arm and Hammer) 1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax 4 1/2 gallons water I use approximately 1/2 – 1 cup per large load (depending on how dirty the clothes are!) Worked out great.

Homemade Laundry Soap!! Sick of buying laundry soap?? Me too. This stuff is awesome because it is way stronger then the store bought laundry soap. You only have to use 1 Tablespoon per load. This recipe makes a huge cookie jar full of soap and is going to last a life time, well maybe not quit that long. Here is what you need: 1 4 lb 12 oz box Borax (2.15 kg or 76 oz) found in the detergent isle 1 4 lb box Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (1.81 kg) found in the cooking isle 1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda 55 oz (3 lb 7 oz) found in the detergent isle 3 bars of Fels-Naptha soap, found in the detergent isle (if you use Zote bars use 2 bars instead, Zote can be found at Home Depot) 2 small containers of Oxy Clean or store brand Oxy Clean (try to get about 3.5 lbs total (1.58 kg)) found in the detergent isle. (this is optional, I added it into mine because I have pretty messy kids and the cleaner the better) You should be able to find all of these items at your grocery store. **Use 1-2 Tablespoons per load. How to Clean the Washing Machine Ever wonder how to clean a washing machine? Well I have to admit I’ve thought about doing this 100 times but I’ve never actually done it until writing this post. Look at my washing machine, it desperately needed it!!! Seriously gross! Step 1:Fill the washing machine up and pour in 2 cups of white vinegar. Let set for 1 hour. Step 2: Start the washing machine over again and let it run through a complete cycle. When I drained my washing machine it still had some grime on it so I got a sponge out and scrubbed it down really well. Step 3: Fill the washing machine up again and pour in 1 to 2 cups of bleach. Step 4: While the washer is soaking use a couple of Q-Tips and detail all the nooks and crannies of the washer. Look at how clean mine was after detailing it! I even scrubbed the lid and all of the knobs! Step 5: Restart washing machine and let it run through a complete cycle. I have to say I’m pretty happy with the results! Here are my before and after pictures again, pretty amazing!

DIY Shrinky Dinks My parents are both science teachers: which means they always ruined the secrets to magic tricks, they forced me to identify every tree by leaf and bark type, and we always created our own versions of ‘science-y’ toys. We used to cook our Easy-Bake Oven meals with foil and a light bulb, and created our own slime with cornstarch and food coloring. And, when we wanted our own shrinkable art, did we get the sweet pre-printed HeMan or Strawberry Shortcake sheets? Nope. We freehanded it on blank sheets of plastic, and copied the designs from coloring books. The process is simple. Ingredients: - Clean #6 Plastic - Permanent Markers - Scissors - Aluminum Foil - Oven and Tongs or Oven Mitt 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Please include more application ideas in the comments below. Weekend Project: Make a Backsplash from Pebbles, Shells or Leftover Hardware My favorite DIY projects leave lots of room for improvisation and creativity—and this one is spacious. Former Natural Home & Garden art director Susan Wasinger taught me this trick for using found objects—pebbles, seashells, buttons, sea glass, pennies and even galvanized steel hardware—to liven up a bathroom backsplash. (Here’s what you can do with all those leftover steel washers that rattle around in the bottom of the toolbox.) If you’ve never set tile before, you can learn about tools, materials, and techniques at TheTileDoctor.com or check out the video below. Glass globs (also called glass flats, nuggets, pebbles, gems, or half-marbles) are available in a dazzling array of colors and finishes from frosty tumbled textures to pearly iridescent. Find them at craft stores, florist shops, or online at MegaGlass.com. Glass nuggets can look like a sea of bubbles. When the rounded side faces out, the nuggets appear to be bubbling right out of the wall. Creative “Tile” Backsplash Scissors 1.

DEMO! Flour Paste Batik Batik is a resist method of fabric dyeing that uses wax . . . I did a lot of traditional batik back in the early 90's. It's a lot of fun, and you can get some incredible effects. The downside is getting the wax out of the fabric. The easiest method I found was dry-cleaning, though I also know people who would iron the fabric between sheets of newspaper. Since I'm only doing small batches now, and doing it primarily for use in fiber art (not clothing) I've been looking for an easier, dry-cleaning free method of getting the same effects. Materials: 1/2 cup flour, + a few extra tablespoons 1/2 cup water 2 teaspoons alum (helps keep nasty smelly bits from growing) mixer fabric stretcher bars tacks fine tip squeeze bottle or icing tips fabric paint* I originally said "dye," but you really want to use diluted paint paint brush spray bottle iron parchment paper or press cloth 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. I covered the whole surface with this swirly pattern. 7. 8. 9. 10. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17.

Making a stamp from a photograph The August technique of the month is making a stamp from a photograph. This is a technique I adapted from a Lyric Kinard DVD on stamp making. The first time I used this technique was to make a stamp of a feather from a photo I had taken of three feathers I used to keep in my car visor. I actually have that stamp at the end of this tutorial. Lately I have been using a certain motif, a picture of a man, in all sorts of work. I took a soft lead pencil (#7) and penciled in, laying down graphite, over the areas that were black. I think you can see the shiny graphite around the image. I thought I took a photo of the soft-kut BEFORE I went over the lines with a permanent ink pen but I guess I didn't. I used Speedball linoleum cutters, also dead cheap at Dick Blicks, like under $7 for a handle and 5 blades. The upper picture is my first cut and the lower photo is after removing a large amount of soft-kut near the chin. See how the bevel stabilizes the center image? Measuring for a rough cut OK.
