Welcome to the Mathematics Assessment Project News New – TRU Math: Teaching for Robust Understanding of Mathematics is a suite of tools for professional develompent and research - the alpha versions of these documents are available here… More International Awards for Team: Hugh Burkhardt and Malcolm Swan, leaders of the Shell Centre team, have been chosen by the International Commission on Mathematical instruction (ICMI) as the first recipients of the Emma Castelnuovo Medal for Excellence in the Practice of Mathematics Education. This complements the award by ICMI to Alan Schoenfeld of the 2011 Felix Klein Medal for Lifetime Achievement in research. The project is working to design and develop well-engineered assessment tools to support US schools in implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. A Librarian's Tricks for Finding Those 'Complex Texts' Cited in the Common Core A librarian’s ability to find quality texts, like all good magic acts, blends art and science to amaze the audience. We can accomplish things with Google and databases that exceed the ability of the average user. But should we keep this magic to ourselves? Performers Penn and Teller have built their careers on the novel idea of divulging the secrets behind their magic tricks. If there are no secrets, how can there still be magic? The real power here is the ability of the practitioner to connect with his audience. The same holds true for librarians—giving away the secrets of our information-finding powers will only enhance our value within the school community. That’s exactly what most schools need right now. Local teachers recently attended a CC workshop to learn about the elements that comprise a complex text and “close reading.” 1. 2. 3. What we librarians do is magic, or at least it seems that way when we quickly produce the book or resource that a teacher’s been searching for.

Great Math Links Why Use Technology in the Classroom? Technology, when used appropriately, can help make science classroom a site of active learning and critical thinking, furthering student inquiry and connections with the materials. Teachers can use technology to enable students to explore fundamental curriculum issues and answer core questions. Students can use the Internet, electronic databases, applets and other online sources to gather information. They can use spreadsheets, virtual labs, and other programs to store, organize, and analyze information. Students can also integrate multimedia desktop publishing, web publishing, video and audio editing, as well as graphics programs to create and present information in innovative and engaging ways. There are scores of educators and researchers deeply concerned with how our schools, largely the product of 19th century industrial society, are going to prepare students for the 21st century. EX - Alabama Learning Exchange Resources for Implementation Sample curriculum framework documents District curriculum framework documents need to address the curriculum at different grain sizes to be effective, and the Charles A. Dana Center supports districts in creating such framework documents. Sampled below are three of the four types of curriculum framework documents on which we work. These documents represent our thinking about how the concepts and skills described in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics might be developed across the course of a school year. Year-at-a-glance Year-at-a-glance documents show an overview of the mathematics through a year of instruction on one page. Sequenced Units Each of these documents shows the standards clustered into units, and suggests a sequence to the units. These documents are intended as a starting point for districts as they think about the design of their own courses. Elaborated Scope and Sequences www.agilemind.com.

Blog – Common Core Aligned Playlists Featuring LearnZillion LessonPaths and LearnZillion have teamed up to create a comprehensive collection of Common Core aligned learning playlists perfect for providing students with easy access to guided learning experiences. Currently there are 327 Common Core aligned playlists ready and available for free on the LessonPaths site. LessonPaths playlists are displayed in a step-by-step format that allow users to interact with live web content right on the page, keeping students on track without getting lost in a stream of open tabs and new pages. As students progress through a playlist at their own pace, LessonPaths keeps track of completed steps. Flexibility to move within a playlist is provided by a preview that’s always accessible on the side of the screen, allowing users to jump to different steps as needed for reteaching and challenge. The newly added LearnZillion Common Core aligned lessons focus on the use of narrated video for instruction. Here are a few playlists to test drive. Coming Soon!

STatistics Education Web (STEW) One of the goals of the American Statistical Association is to improve statistics education at all levels. Through the STatistics Education Web (STEW), the ASA is reaching out to K-12 mathematics and science teachers who teach statistics concepts in their classrooms. STEW is an online resource for peer-reviewed lesson plans for K-12 teachers. The web site is maintained by the ASA and accessible to K-12 teachers throughout the world. Statistics and probability concepts are included in K-12 curriculum standards, in particular the Common Core State Standards, and on state and national exams; however, few K-12 teachers have formal training or applied experience with statistical concepts. STEW lesson plans identify both the statistical concepts being developed and the age range appropriate for its use. Lesson Plans Grades K - 5 Grades 6 - 8 Grades 9 - 12
