Michele Bachmann's HPV hogwash: Her comments on Perry's Gardasil mandate are irresponsible Jae C. Hong/AP Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann's comment during a Republican debate that the HPV vaccine could cause mental retardation was irresponsible. On Sept. 12, in the Republican presidential debate in Tampa, Michele Bachmann served up a home-run pitch to Texas Gov. It was a terrible exchange for all who believe that intelligence generated from carefully performed scientific studies should determine public health policy. Bachmann was angry that Perry, through a 2007 executive order, mandated a Human Papillomavirus vaccine for Texas schoolgirls - with an opt-out provision for moms and dads who'd rather not have their daughters inoculated. The answer Perry ought to have given was obvious, even though he chose not to give it: "I make no apologies. After the debate, Bachmann upped the ante. The contention is remarkable, given that natural HPV itself doesn't infect the brain. In fact, Bachmann has inadvertently shown precisely why mandates are valuable. But she should be.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism. His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy. The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
