Powerful Facts About Visual Communication

Powerful Facts About Visual Communication
Did you know that visuals are processed 60,000 times faster than text? Or how about the fact that they are processed simultaneously? I wanted to share some interesting facts about visuals with you today from an article by Mike Parkinson of billiondollargraphics.com. Ever wonder why you can process visuals so much faster than text? This is because visuals are processed simultaneously whereas words are processed sequentially. Did you know that visual imagery is more powerful than words alone when used to communicate a message to an audience. A study commissioned by 3M Corporation, suggests that you can be 43% more effective when using visual aids as a presenter. The Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab asked 2,440 participants how they evaluated the credibility of a web site they were shown. Why is this the case? Graphics do what text alone cannot do. 1) Cognitively: “Graphics expedite and increase our level of communication. As you can see, having the right visuals is incredibly powerful.

Elvis in potato chip neuroscience A new study just published in Cerebral Cortex on the neuroscience on how we see meaningful information in unpatterned visual scenes, seems a little fixated on Elvis. The study concludes: Future studies of the neural processing relevant to pareidolia and to meaning more generally may provide novel insights into how the organization of conceptual processing differs across individuals (see also Pizzagalli et al. 2001), thereby addressing the question of what neurocognitive architecture is necessary to see a potato chip not just as a tasty snack but as the embodiment of Elvis. They even include a photo of the potato chip (proper spelling: crisp) that supposedly contains the image of The King which you can see above. Unfortunately, I can’t see it, which I suspect means my brain has been ruined by the overuse of Fidonet as a child. Link to Elvis obsessed neuroscience study.

Business Graphics - Billion Dollar Business Graphics The Power of Visual Comms The Power of Visual Communication Mike Parkinson What we see has a profound effect on what we do, how we feel, and who we are. Through experience and experimentation, we continually increase our understanding of the visual world and how we are influenced by it. Psychologist Albert Mehrabian demonstrated that 93% of communication is nonverbal. Studies find that the human brain deciphers image elements simultaneously, while language is decoded in a linear, sequential manner taking more time to process. Relatively speaking, in terms of communication, textual ubiquity is brand new. People think using pictures. When it comes to quick, clear communication, visuals trump text almost every time. The very same visual elements that we are indelibly drawn to and so quickly absorb not only communicate data more efficiently and effectively but also affect us emotionally. How do you feel when you look at this picture? How many times have you heard, "I didn't believe it until I saw it." 1. 2. 3. 4.

Your Cosmic Clock Want to be happy? Don't live in the UK | Money Miserable weather, not enough holidays, and lower life expectancy ... why live in the UK? Photograph: Gerry Penny/EPA The UK and Ireland have been named as the worst places to live in Europe for quality of life, according to research published today. The UK has the 4th highest age – 63.1 – at which people choose or can afford to take retirement, and one of the lowest holiday entitlements. UK workers enjoy a week less holiday than the European average and three weeks less than the Spanish, while the UK's spend (as a percentage of GDP) on health and education is below the European average and UK food and diesel prices are the highest in Europe. Ireland has the lowest numbers of hours of sunshine, the second lowest government spend on health as a proportion of GDP and the second highest retirement age of 64.1. If that's not bad enough, France, Spain, Germany, Holland, Sweden and Italy all enjoy a longer life expectancy than the UK, according to uSwitch.com's latest Quality of Life Index.

DataVis and Infographics Advertisement The main goal of data visualization is its ability to visualize data, communicating information clearly and effectivelty. It doesn’t mean that data visualization needs to look boring to be functional or extremely sophisticated to look beautiful. To convey ideas effectively, both aesthetic form and functionality need to go hand in hand, providing insights into a rather sparse and complex data set by communicating its key-aspects in a more intuitive way. Yet designers often tend to discard the balance between design and function, creating gorgeous data visualizations which fail to serve its main purpose — communicate information. In both print and web design infographics — visual representations of information, data or knowledge — are often used to support information, strengthen it and present it within a provoking and sensitive context, depending on designer’s creativity. (ats/ap)

Value of Data Vis Yesterday I tried going through my cell phone bill to check some usage stats and isolate costs, a completely maddening experience made unnecesarily slow through poor design. Whomever "designed" AT&T's billing statements was apparently tasked with flummoxing the customer at all costs. Any page you click through has several dozen if not hundreds of clickable options, most of them completely irrelevant, making the four or five things you'd like to see on your bill just about impossible to find. The language is vague, the usage of color seemingly arbitrary, the sizes of various elements in no way corresponds to their importance, and the layout is nonsensical. Column Five—perhaps a twist on the "Fifth Column" trope?—is a California-based infographics, PR and strategy firm that put out the following informational video, simply titled "The Value of Data Visualization":

great ages and cycles The Great Ages in astrology are an Earth phenomenon based on the Earth's precessional wobble -which is in turn a Solar or Sun-directed event. Information is downloaded from our main Sun to our planet's inner sun and effected through the vast fields surrounding our planet. These fields in turn, affect the fields of all life forms on the planet. Everything is fields affecting fields, and the stars, planets, and life forms serve as the anchor points. Astrology is the key to understanding the Great Ages and other vast time cycles affecting our Earth and cosmos. Here on Earth, the 24-hour(23hrs56min to be precise) day is our basic time cycle based on the Earth's rotation around its central inner sun axis. The Earth has its own field which interacts with the inner sun field(hence two magnetic poles) and also sustains or regulates the planet. Our next major time cycle is the year which is based on our planet's orbital relationship to the Sun. What about astrology?
