Put a bunch of these malleable minds together in a company, and you create the potential for some truly original thinking. We already know that businesses thrive on the diversity of ideas created by a multicultural workforce.

Reis Your cover letter and curriculum vita may well be the most important documents you will ever write. They are the first things most academic search committees see, and if you don't want them to also be the last things, you need to take the time to do them right. Although both your cover letter and C.V. must be able to stand on their own, they are clearly linked and so should be developed in tandem. In this column we will look at the cover letter.

Bureaucracy Bureaucratics is a project consisting of a book (ISBN 978-1-59005-232-7, now sold out) and a traveling exhibition that has so far been shown in museums and galleries in some twenty countries on five continents. The book and the exhibition contain 50 photographs and are the product of an anarchist’s heart, a historian’s mind and an artist’s eye. Bureaucratics is a comparative photographic study of the culture, rituals and symbols of state civil administrations and its servants in eight countries on five continents, selected on the basis of polical, historical and cultural considerations: Bolivia, China, France, India, Liberia, Russia, the United States, and Yemen. In each country, I visited up to hundreds of offices of members of the executive in different services and at different levels. The visits were unannounced and the accompanying writer, Will Tinnemans, by interviewing kept the employees from tidying up or clearing the office.

Domaine de Juchepie Winemaking A great wine is not made in the cellar. According to our philosophy, wine is madein the vineyard, and not in the cellar. Neither is it the winegrower, not the oenologue, who creates the wine. Why schould they, when nature itself can do it, and a lot better, if you give it the opportunity to do so. Our task consists merely of the accompanying of the natural process of fermentation, in which we want to intervene as little as possible. Fighting Factions: How Startups Can Scale Without Mutiny David Loftesness and Alexander Grosse know a thing or two about hypergrowth. You might say they wrote the book on it. Between them, they’ve held engineering leadership roles at Twitter, SoundCloud, Amazon/A9, issuu and Nokia — in many cases, during periods when hot products demanded that those companies stretch in new ways, and fast. Now Grosse, Director of Engineering for BCG Digital Ventures, and Loftesness, the Head of Platform at eero, have lived through both the brilliant and bleak moments of scaling teams. Throughout their careers, they’ve noted one problem that can be particularly damaging to a fast-growing company: factions. Because if you’re going to launch the proverbial rocket ship, you need everyone focused on the same destination—not wrestling over the controls.
