An Unexpected, But Adorable, Rescue of a Baby Squirrel A family was enjoying an afternoon outside when they happened upon a tiny baby squirrel in their back yard. Its tail was wet and it absolutely refused to move from its spot. He was pearched precariously on top of rocks near a small stream - a strange spot for a baby squirrel to favor. Little is known about the man himself, however in 1980 his company filed for bankruptcy. Thankfully for us, some years ago his inter-office communications appeared online for all to see. Mitik, The Orphaned Baby Walrus Earlier this year, fisherman off the coast of Alaska rescued an orphaned baby walrus. Named ‘Mitik’ by the 14 year old daughter of one of the rescuers, the adorable five week old baby walrus was then sent to the New York Aquarium via Anchorage. After surviving a bladder infection and Hurricane Sandy, Mitik is now doing well in his new home in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Pull Over! 10 American Roadside Attractions Worth Stopping For Although nothing encapsulates summer adventure quite like the excitement of the open road, we have to admit being stuck in a car for hours on end can get a bit monotonous. Scenery is pretty and all, but we think the best parts of a road trip are the roadside attractions, offering unexpected, quirky detours along the way for the weary, bordering-on-bored traveler. Dotting highways and small towns across America, many attractions hearken back to times past, decades when ogling the largest ball of paint or the local three-ring flea circus was considered legitimate “entertainment”.

Striped hyenas bred at Visakhapatnam zoo The New Year has brought in some good news for the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) here which announced the successful captive breeding of striped hyenas — a first in its history. This comes after two consecutive failures, when the two previous litters did not survive. Of the three cubs in the new litter, the zoo authorities could save one male, which is currently being looked after at the zoo hospital after its mother turned hostile. The two-month-old cub has been named Ayush. r a n d o m t e l e p o r t e r f o r G o o g l e S t r e e t V i e w (via @B o i n g B o i n g) - Michael Lebowitz I FIRST heard of Amazon’s new “promotion” from my bookseller daughter, Emily, in an e-mail with the subject line “Can You Hear Me Screaming in Brooklyn?” According to a link Emily supplied, Amazon was encouraging customers to go into brick-and-mortar bookstores on Saturday, and use its price-check app (which allows shoppers in physical stores to see, by scanning a bar code, if they can get a better price online) to earn a 5 percent credit on Amazon purchases (up to $5 per item, and up to three items). Books, interestingly enough, were excluded, but you could use your Amazon credit online to buy other things that bookstores sell these days, like music and DVDs. And, if you were scanning, say, the new Steve Jobs biography, you’d no doubt be informed that you were about to pay way too much. These writers all derive considerable income from Amazon’s book sales.

How Could You Not Love Bats? Egad. I sincerely love bats and can't wait to someday have lots of them on The Property. They get such a bad rap, with all the rabies and vampire legends - but they are important and useful members of the ecosystem. The most common type of bat in Oregon, little brown bats (really), can eat more than 600 insects in an hour. How-do Jobs BBC North is going to be an incredible place to work. Orphaned baby owls Linford and Christie By Nick Enoch Published: 10:54 GMT, 20 March 2012 | Updated: 14:13 GMT, 20 March 2012 It's not the usual thing you'd expect to find in a kitchen - but these orphaned baby owls seemed right at home as they nestled in two cups. The feathered pair were clearly having a hoot after moving into the home of their wildlife park keeper, Jimmy Robinson. The six-week-old burrowing owlets, nicknamed Linford and Christie, were hatched in an incubator, and are now being hand-reared by Jimmy - who works at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire - and are given 24-hour care. Don't worry, owl do the washing-up: The two orphaned baby owls are having a hoot after moving into the home of their Longleat keeper Jimmy Robinson

ZooBorns The San Diego Zoo’s Mandrill group welcomed a new addition to their ranks last week. Female, Kesi, gave birth to a baby boy, and he is the first Mandrill born at the Zoo in over 14 years. Animal care staff had been watching for Kesi to give birth; but the night before, there were still no signs she was in labor. The next day, staff members said they were surprised to see Kesi walk out of her bedroom holding her new baby. “It’s like every day we would come in, in the morning, and think like there might be a baby – we don’t know,” Jenny Baublit, senior primate keeper at the San Diego Zoo. “To actually see it was pretty incredible. Google URL Shortener Posted by Michael Hermanto, Software Engineer, Firebase We launched the Google URL Shortener back in 2009 as a way to help people more easily share links and measure traffic online. Since then, many popular URL shortening services have emerged and the ways people find content on the Internet have also changed dramatically, from primarily desktop webpages to apps, mobile devices, home assistants, and more. To refocus our efforts, we're turning down support for goo.gl over the coming weeks and replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). FDLs are smart URLs that allow you to send existing and potential users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app. We're excited to grow and improve the product going forward.
