Matchbox: Large Scale Bayesian Recommendations Matchbox: Large Scale Bayesian Recommendations David Stern, Ralf Herbrich, and Thore Graepel 2009 We present a probabilistic model for generating personalised recommendations of items to users of a web service. PowerMeter We launched Google PowerMeter as a free energy monitoring tool to raise awareness about the importance of giving people access to their energy information. PowerMeter included key features like visualizations of your energy usage, the ability share information with others, and personalized recommendations to save energy. We partnered with device manufacturers and utilities around the world. Many of our partners now have new options available for accessing energy information. We are pleased that PowerMeter helped demonstrate the importance of access to energy information, and created a model for others. We retired the service on September 16, 2011.

AP using ethnography to rethink news in the digital age Last year, Associated Press commissioned Baltimore-based Context-Based Research Group to conduct an ethnographic research study focusing on the news consumption habits of young digital consumers in six cities around the world. The drive for this research came from the recognition that a significant shift in news consumption behaviour is taking place among younger generations. The study’s main finding was that the subjects were overloaded with facts and updates and were having trouble moving more deeply into the background and resolution of news stories. The report, which is presented today at the World Editors Forum in Goteborg, Sweden, structures the field study findings in a series of headings with short, one page descriptions: These research insights helped AP design a new model for news delivery to meet the needs of young adults, who are driving the shift from traditional media to digital news. - Read news article - Download report (pdf, 3.6 mb, 71 pages)

Introducing our smart contact lens project You’ve probably heard that diabetes is a huge and growing problem—affecting one in every 19 people on the planet. But you may not be familiar with the daily struggle that many people with diabetes face as they try to keep their blood sugar levels under control. Uncontrolled blood sugar puts people at risk for a range of dangerous complications, some short-term and others longer term, including damage to the eyes, kidneys and heart.

Machine learning for dummies - Next at Microsoft [image courtesy of Ariel Stallings] Say machine learning to most people and they’ll look at you suspiciously – even people in the tech industry have a degree of caution is it conjures up notions of machines taking over the world in some sort of Terminator/singularity way. I think it’s because people translate it in to “machines that learn” which as it turns out, is a perfectly good way to think about this topic. I decided to dig a little deep and get past the jargon as I think it’s an increasingly important field and will help unlock the potential for natural user interfaces and technology that anticipates our needs and feels more human. To get some answers, I headed to Building 99 on Microsoft Campus to track down John Platt.

Publications by Googlers Google publishes hundreds of research papers each year. Publishing is important to us; it enables us to collaborate and share ideas with, as well as learn from, the broader scientific community. Submissions are often made stronger by the fact that ideas have been tested through real product implementation by the time of publication. We believe the formal structures of publishing today are changing - in computer science especially, there are multiple ways of disseminating information. We encourage publication both in conventional scientific venues, and through other venues such as industry forums, standards bodies, and open source software and product feature releases.

Visible Human Project Overview The Visible Human Project® is an outgrowth of the NLM's 1986 Long-Range Plan. It is the creation of complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of the normal male and female human bodies. Most of the smart phones have it, tablet and based on the trend, it's slowly come to our desktop as well. To develop a touch screen compatible web applications or website, you can use the existing touch events of the browsers or the platforms.
