Gallery Artistic visions for prosthetic design VIII - taking a leather and steel brace arm towards Red Arm III : technical right below elbow amputee issues This is part of my Red Hand Series . Summer approaches and I need a stylish arm. Wearing just one shirt (and not another one underneath) looks weird with the cable controlled arm – and wearing the harness directly on the skin is uncomfortable. Being a resourceful person, I was able to snatch an almost unused mint condition 1964 prosthetic arm made from leather and steel – see photos – that fits my stump perfectly. This arm oozes style. It is definitely going to be my Red Arm III. I am about to change that glove to something else that will obviously be red – but not right now. Here is how I got it. Being a really resourceful person, I happened to have an Original Otto Bock fitting silicone glove for this hand. As you see this works well even with no air condition – it looks spiffy and spot on with short sleeved orsleeve free shirts. The thumb even has a spring in it. Interestingly, month and year (3/64) point back to a manufacturing time about 35 years ago. Here we are, the 1964 bolt.

Undergraduate Courses Lower Limb Prosthesis for a Racing Cyclist (Tim Melville) The brief for my fourth year project was to design and build a replacement lower limb prosthesis for Keith Moore, a racing cyclist from near Cambridge. He suffered a cycling accident over 10 years ago and had to have his right leg amputated below the knee. Over the course of his rehabilitation, the NHS had provided him with a specialised cycling prosthesis. Although the fittings were bespoke, the design philosophy had been over-conservative, and there was a cumbersome arrangement of titanium tubing and heavy steel connectors. A considerable performance benefit could be achieved by making the new limb lighter and more streamlined. Keith and his prosthetist were, however, satisfied with the geometry of his old prosthesis; the dimensions and angles between the stump socket and the pedal connection were to be preserved. Construction took place in the Addenbrooke's workshops, with expert assistance from the technicians there.
