Have you ever talked to yourself when you are getting ready to go on a trip? Have you asked yourself, “Have I packed that sweater?” either nonverbally or verbally? Children may use that type of self-talk to tell themselves to exhibit an appropriate behavior. For example, a child may say to himself, “Stay in your seat.” When a child with ADHD becomes frustrated with his schoolwork, it is generally due to one of many reasons. What behaviors might they exhibit? So what can the teacher do then? Back to the signal—when the teacher touches the child with ADHD on the shoulder, for example, the child says to himself, “Sit quietly.”
