Lateral thinking Lateral thinking is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. The term was coined in 1967 by Edward de Bono. [1] According to de Bono, lateral thinking deliberately distances itself from standard perceptions of creativity as either "vertical" logic (the classic method for problem solving: working out the solution step-by-step from the given data) or "horizontal" imagination (having many ideas but being unconcerned with the detailed implementation of them). Methods[edit] Critical thinking is primarily concerned with judging the true value of statements and seeking errors. Lateral thinking is more concerned with the "movement value" of statements and ideas. Random Entry Idea Generating Tool: The thinker chooses an object at random, or a noun from a dictionary, and associates it with the area they are thinking about. See also[edit]

Before you continue, it is important to understand what we mean by creativity, as there are two completely different types. The first is technical creativity, where people create new theories, technologies or ideas. Many of the techniques in this chapter have been used by great thinkers to drive their creativity. Approaches to Creativity There are two main strands to technical creativity: programmed thinking and lateral thinking. The other main strand uses 'Lateral Thinking'. Programmed Thinking and Lateral Thinking Lateral thinking recognizes that our brains are pattern recognition systems, and that they do not function like computers. The benefit of good pattern recognition is that we can recognize objects and situations very quickly. Using Creativity

startuplab.net | The Idea Consultants The sources of innovation are ... The chart above comes from our recent survey of economics bloggers. For me, the results showed what I hope but were disappointing in that every source of innovation that we listed got a "Gentleman's B" or higher. The good news is that all of our policymakers think innovation is a good thing, growth is a good thing, and so on. The bad news is they still act on that instinct with classic "spend more" solutions. Our panel of experts believes that the most important source of innovation is the "small start-up firm" which is in contrast to the venture-financed firms. The manufacturer-centric model does fit some fields and conditions.
