Boston considering mixed reality high school - Hypergrid Busines Boston students may be able to attend a virtual high school in September 2010, if Roxbury Institute of Technology‘s plans for a charter high school are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education. The school will combine a virtual environment, based on the Sun Wonderland virtual platform, and a real-world school with boarding facilities. The school plans to provide an education to students in special circumstances such as those unable to leave their homes or who are in prison — as well as honors students with a strong interest in technology. However, any student living in the city of Boston can apply. Virtual students attending a real class. (Photo courtesy of the Roxbury Institute of Technology.) AbGradCon 2009: A Glimpse into Mixed-Reality Meetings of the Fut Weary of catching planes, burning up fossil fuels, and spending lots of time and money to attend meetings? Take heart! Virtual worlds are shaping up as possible venues for online meetings--and astrobiology graduate students are leading the way in exploring their potential. On July 17-18, 2009, early-career astrobiologists met at the University of Washington in Seattle for the 6th annual Astrobiology Graduate Student Conference (AbGradCon), and simultaneously in the virtual world Second Life. Students presented talks that were streamed live into Second Life and participated in a real-world and virtual world "mixed reality" poster session. Social media such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter were also used for sharing information before, during and after the conference. Because talks and the poster session were taking place at the same time in Seattle and Second Life, the organizers set up visual "portals" to allow participants in both worlds to see each other. Mixed Reality gaming in Japan One of the areas of convergence for location-based applications and gaming is the idea of mixed reality, where places in the game correspond to real-world locations, and actions in one lead to events or consequences in the other. Treasure Quest: Enoshima – Treasure of the Dragon, is a mixed-reality game for Nintendo DS users that takes users on a treasure hunt around the small island of Enoshima north of Tokyo. Once players get the free software, they travel around the island and pick up clues to find the treasure (the catch of course is that you have to physically travel to the island and be able to read Japanese). So, why would this be interesting to people beyond the few who can actually play the game before it ends on February 19th? via Pink Tentacle
