Free Technology for Teachers

Earlier this week Google released "historical" imagery for Google Maps Street View. That imagery only goes back seven years. To show your students historical imagery from the 20th Century, take a look at the following options. Historypin is probably my favorite service for locating geo-located historical imagery. Historypin allows anyone with a Google account to place images within the setting of current Google Maps Streetview imagery. If you don't have images to add, you can simply explore the imagery added by others.

Langwitches I have been a fan of Visible Thinking Routines which were developed by Project Zero from Havard, for a while now. I have used these routines with students, as blogging routines and in professional development workshops. The Visible Thinking Routines website explains that: Routines exist in all classrooms; they are the patterns by which we operate and go about the job of learning and working together in a classroom environment. A routine can be thought of as any procedure, process, or pattern of action that is used repeatedly to manage and facilitate the accomplishment of specific goals or tasks.[…] Classrooms also have routines that structure the way students go about the process of learning As I am trying to make 21st century, modern, contemporary or “now” learning visible, it seemed a natural step to point out “Modern” or “Now” Learning Routines.

Research There are many graduate students world wide conducting thesis and dissertation research on the effectiveness of WebQuests. Some of these studies have made it into print as well, though the number of data-based studies in refereed journals is still small. There is not, at this point, any edited bibilography available about WebQuest research.

Math Survey – Students I am taking Justin Lanier’s call to action from his talk “Beyond Beauty” at the Global Math Department. I posted over the weekend about the results of my survey of teachers and staff at my school. Today, I gave it to my students. High Possibility Classrooms: Student Agency Through Technology-Enhanced Learning Imagine a classroom where very young students produce beautiful paper puppets that are scanned and then used to inform writing narratives. Picture a classroom where the teacher tells elementary school students on a regular basis: "Questions are more important than answers." Visualize a classroom with long bench-like seats that are set up around work tables and where there is no teacher desk -- a place where the teacher uses a process called Q U E S T and BYOD to support middle school students in understanding what topics in the curriculum are important to them. Envisage a high school classroom where eager students learn film protocols in a digital media unit alongside their visual arts teacher who is a successful Australian filmmaker. Does this all sound a little too idealistic?

Bloomz - Streamline Communication With Parents A few weeks ago my friend Vicki Davis raved to me about how much she liked using Bloomz to communicate with parents. Last week I finally had the time to explore everything Bloomz has to offer and I was able to see why Vicki spoke so highly of it. At its core Bloomz is a messaging service for teachers and it does that well. Dive deeper into what Bloomz offers and you'll see that it is more than just a messaging tool. In Bloomz you can create classes, contact lists, and discussion groups.
