~ Pink Tentacle In the sophisticated popular culture of the Edo period (1603-1868), much attention was devoted to Japan's rich pantheon of traditional monsters and apparitions, known as yokai. Sometimes frightening, sometimes humorous, these compelling Japanese folk creatures were the subject of numerous artistic and literary works. One such work was Hyakkai Zukan, a collection of picture scrolls completed in 1737 by Sawaki Suushi, a relatively unknown artist who studied under master painter Hanabusa Itcho (1702-1772). Hyakkai Zukan's colorful depictions of Japan's most notorious creatures inspired (and were copied by) yokai artists for generations. Here is a peek inside.

Light Novels vs Manga reading difficulty? I'm going to recommend that you jump into whatever you want to first. Don't worry about the difficulty - if it is something that you really want to read, you will read it. For decided what kind of Japanese to immerse yourself in, don't follow the i+1 idea. This will definitely lead you down... well, an impossible path. Why not let someone else take care of the monetary part of going to Japan so you can go there for free? There are a lot of people (and governments) just handing out money (I feel like the guy that wears the question-mark suit on those commercials) to help you go to Japan and other places as well. The 20+ Best Japanese Cat Videos On The Web Welcome back to another Saturday Timewaster! I hope the next couple hours of your Saturday are clear (otherwise, you’ll need to clear your schedule and cancel that totally unimportant appointment). This post is all about Japanese cat videos… The best there is on the web (at least in my opinion). This Is Going To Be Tough If I could, there’d be a thousand Japanese cat videos on this blog post. Unfortunately, I have the very important task of cutting down and showing you the best Japanese cat videos on the web. Good beginner manga to read? I'm loving "Yotsuba," and I'm pretty newbish. In fact, ems573, we may be around the same general level. I finished RTK1 a few weeks ago, and I've been doing smart.fm (through Step 4) and anki lists (JLPT3 and 4) since. I am pleasantly surprised that I can read Yotsuba pretty well. I still need the help of a dictionary, but there are times when I can read 2-3 pages in a row before I need to look up a word.
