Django on Dokku I’ve been experimenting a bit with Dokku a bit recently, with a view to automating deployment of some small services. Getting a Django app up and running using Dokku is fairly easy… I’m using dokku-alt here, as it preconfigures some useful plugins and has some feature improvements over the original. Minecraft Modding Classes - ThoughtSTEM Beneath the world of Minecraft is an equally fascinating world of hardware and software -- built upon 150 years of computer science history. This class introduces students to this new world by exploring client/server architectures, network security, operating systems, and computer programming. To explore this world, students will be guided in setting up Minecraft servers and building Minecraft mods – while also being taught key computer science principles.

Teaching Kids to Code Every era demands--and rewards--different skills. In different times and different places, we have taught our children to grow vegetables, build a house, forge a sword or blow a delicate glass, bake bread, create a soufflé, write a story or shoot hoops. Now we are teaching them to code. We are teaching them to code, however, not so much as an end in itself but because our world has morphed: so many of the things we once did with elements such as fire and iron, or tools such as pencil and paper, are now wrought in code. We are teaching coding to help our kids craft their future. In this collection we share many different perspectives on coding, from a university professor's vantage point (MIT's Mitch Resnick describes why learning to code is like learning to learn) to an entrepreneur's reflections from his cross-country roadtrip to bring coding--and his stuffed dog--to classrooms across the U.S.

Bootstrap Bootstrap leverages students' excitement around videogames to teach algebraic concepts through programming. "This program Bootstrap is the best thing that happened to my son Omari, in one week dealing with math and computer programing for video games, then a whole year of math in school. His excitement to continue programing and his newfound love for college level math is going to propel him in the upcoming year. The K–12 Center at ETS: Invitational Research Symposium on Science Assessment September 24–25, 2013 Washington, D.C. This two-day research meeting brought together more than 250 leaders in science, education and assessment from academia, industry and government, including teams from some 30 states, to explore the skills and competencies called for in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the measurement challenges and opportunities they pose. Commissioned papers were presented on the design of both summative tasks and formative systems that adhere to the vision of instruction underlying the NGSS. In addition, the policy and practice work ahead, including the difficult trade-offs to be made in the designs of comprehensive science assessment systems, were discussed. The closing two sessions were made available on the web in real time and the videos can be viewed below. View the Agenda (PDF)

Cross-browser fingerprinting test 2.0 While we browse the web, most web pages have an interest in observing our behaviour in order to achieve certain business benefits. Read more » For example, they would like to know what kind of content the visitor is interested in, and, more specifically, what to recommend to a user who has already downloaded certain page(s) (e.g. article(s)). Therefore, vaguely knowing users’ areas of interest is often insufficient; most web pages will be interested in the entire course of a visit, and, in the case of returning visitors, they want to know the whole browsing history, too. In order to pull this off, the web server needs to store a personal 'file' about each user, and must be able to identify returning visitors. However, there are certain technical restrictions to such activities, and therefore newer and newer techniques are invented to identify and profile users.
