Gulpiyuri Beach - A Stange Beach in the Middle of a Meadow
Tucked away into a small inland hollow, right in the middle of a meadow, Playa de Gulpiyuri is one of the most amazing beaches in the world. We’ve certainly featured some unique places here, on Oddity Central, and even a few incredible beaches, like the hot water beach of New Zealand or California’s glass beach, but none like the beach of Gulpiyuri. Located near the charming town of Llanes, on the northern coast of Spain, Gulpiyuri Beach is unlike anything I have ever seen, or even imagined existed outside of fantasy books or fictional planets. Imagine walking over 100 meters from the sea shoreline and stumbling over a small charming beach right in the middle of a green meadow. And while you may find other beaches completely hidden from the open sea, around the world, this one is actually fully tidal and even has waves bathing the small strip of golden sand. Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia The stunning Plitvice Lakes National Park lies in the Lika region of Croatia. The park is surrounded by the mountains Plješevica, Mala Kapela, and Medveđak, which are part of the Dinaric Alps. The 16 blue-green Plitvice Lakes, which are separated by natural dams of travertine, are situated on the Plitvice plateau. Waterfalls connect the lakes, and the tallest waterfall is Veliki Slap at 70 meters (230 feet) tall. The Plitvice lakes area boasts a large variety of interesting and colorful flora and fauna.

Global Grasshopper | Travel Tips and Inspiration John Green’s Crash Course in World History Former mental_floss writers John and Hank Green have started a new nerdy thing on YouTube, and it's pretty great: Crash Course is a series of educational videos covering World History (John) and Biology (Hank). The production values are high (including animation, HD, all that good stuff), and each video is about ten minutes long. My favorites so far are John's videos on World History -- he promises a 40-part series (co-written with his high school history teacher), though only three parts have been posted so far. Check 'em out below. The Agricultural Revolution "Together we will learn how, in a mere fifteen thousand years, humans went from hunting and gathering--[interrupted by younger self offscreen]" Indus Valley Civilization "Why am I alive? Mesopotamia "You know, you can tell the quality of a historian by the number of his or her globes." More You can find more, including Hank's Biology courses, at the Crash Course channel.

Synesthesia - Dr. Hugo Heyrman ( ( (Motions of the Mind) ) ) A Cathedral Made from 55,000 LED Lights The Luminarie De Cagna is an imposing cathedral-like structure that was recently on display at the 2012 Light Festival in Ghent, Belgium. The festival was host to almost 30 exhibitions including plenty of 3D projection mapping, fields of luminous flowers, and a glowing phone booth aquarium, however with 55,000 LEDs and towering 28 meters high the Luminarie De Cagna seems to have stolen the show. Other benefits of becoming a volunteer English teacher, helping out at orphanages or conservation work include improving your Spanish and seeing sides to Central America that perhaps would otherwise be missed. Along with its beaches and biodiversity, Central America is particularly rich in grassroots volunteer organisations looking for volunteers to lend a helping hand. Skilled hands are particularly welcome but often the only requirement is enthusiasm and a willingness to get those helping hands dirty. The Prettiest Town We've Ever Visited: Lijiang Old Town Ever heard of Lijiang? It’s an old town in northern Yunnan, in what was once the Dali Kingdom, the fought-over hinterland between China and Tibet. Curved eave buildings topple up narrow alleys towards a Qing dynasty pagoda. Willows and flowers drip over its narrow canals, crossed by slender bridges. Old shophouses cater for the tourist trade — as always in mainland China, more Chinese than Western. There are little waterwheels in the alleyways but the big one marks where the old town ends and the new city begins, a cusp between the past and the future. Lijiang is full of flowers, all year round. In winter there are bonsai plum trees, in summer they bring out azaleas and in spring the town is full of orchids. Chocolate box? Disneyfied? I mean, you can even play with eagles in the town square. We’ve seen some amazing places since we left. What’s yours? Our thanks to China Odyssey Tours for hosting us in Lijiang.

Free Classic AudioBooks. Digital narration for the 21st Century Bars As far as nightlife goes, in Porto, Portugal, it is all happening downtown. A local company, Baixa (baixa is Portuguese for downtown), has recently added another downtown nightclub to its roster that already includes the Baixa bar. The new nightclub, Instalação (installation), was designed by José Carlos Cruz Arquitecto, the same team responsible for the design of Baixa bar as well as the Farmacia Lordelo we have featured earlier. The space for Instalação, opened in March, was in essence a long, narrow corridor with two dividing structural arches that support the building itself. From this 250 square-meter (2,690 sq.ft.) space the designers created a golden wire tunnel where the main materials are concrete, brass and polished aluminum. Andy Warhol’s Factory inspired some of the ideas for the smaller VIP room, and Anish Kapoor’s ideas gave suggestions for the beautifully textured concrete ceiling – our favourite part of the entire project.
