API users & API wrappers Suppose you have a sparse RAM API, something along the lines of: add_range(base, size)write_ram(base, bytes)read_ram(base, size) People use this API for things like running a simulated CPU: define the accessible memory with add_range()pass the initial state to the simulator with write_ram()run the simulation, get the final state with read_ram() Suppose this API becomes a runaway success, with a whopping 10 programmers using it (very little irony here, >95% of the APIs in this world are used exclusively by their designer). Then chances are that 9 of the 10 programmers are API users, and 1 of them is an API wrapper. API users The first thing the first API user does is call you. add_range(0x100000, 6) # input range add_range(0x200000, 6) # output range write_ram(0x100000, "abcdef") # run a program converting the input to uppercase print read_ram(0x200000, 6) # should print "ABCDEF" It runs. Then some time later you stumble upon the following code: Waitaminnit. But none of them did. API wrappers

iGlue Structured Data This week ReadWriteWeb will run a series of posts detailing what we think are the 5 biggest, most cutting edge Web trends to come out of 2009. We'll be posting one trend analysis per day. Then at the end of the week we'll publish a major update to our standard presentation about web technology trends. The first major Web trend we're looking at is Structured Data. Web of Data, Not Documents Tim Berners-Lee said in February this year that we're now in a Web of Data, rather than a Web of Documents. However over the past few years, we've seen that there are many other ways to structure data and enable others to build off it. The basic principle of the Web of Data is still the same as what Alex Iskold articulated on ReadWriteWeb back in March 2007: "unstructured information will give way to structured information - paving the road to more intelligent computing." Example 1: OpenCalais Example 2: Google Rich Snippets Example 3: Wolfram Alpha Conclusion ReadWriteWeb's Top 5 Web Trends of 2009:

VisiNav -- Visual Data Search and Navigation VisiNav is a system to search and navigate web data, collected from a multitude of sources. In summary, the system demonstrates how to combine data from multiple sources into a single unified view, how to search and navigate the aggregated dataset, and how to re-use query results from web data in external applications. On a conceptual level, VisiNav deals with objects. Objects can have attributes and links to other objects. Some of the funcationality of VisiNav can nowadays be found in Google's KnowledgeGraph and Facebook's Graph Search. The dataset in the online system has been collected from the web (view top 99 sources - requires SVG-capable browser). Now, the system allows for searching objects teleporting between objects faceted browsing to incrementally restrict a result set set-based link navigation to navigate between object sets You can visualise query results in a table, graph, map, or timeline view. The following video demonstrates the capabilities of the system. Andreas Harth.

GoogleSearch Evolves - But Has Google Finally Lost its Core Foc Yesterday at Google's Searchology event, which we live-blogged, the search market leader announced two significant features to its search product: Search Options and Rich Snippets. It also previewed a new fact-finding search product called Google Squared. The first two features are already live on google.com and they've notably extended Google's core search product. As we sit back and reflect on the meaning of this, one thing is starkly clear: the core Google search experience is now much more than a simple search box on a plain white background, which it was for so long. Just how far has Google evolved its search experience over recent years? The Evolution of Google Search (in a Nutshell) The features announced today, and in particular 'Search Options', build on Google's Universal Search announcements of two years ago at the same event. Then last November, Google introduced SearchWiki: the ability to add, annotate, and remove your search results. Image from Matt Cutts

Digg Beyond Digg With New Chrome And Firefox Extensions One common complaint about Digg is that you have to visit the site to actually digg anything. Well, unless you use the Digg toolbar, which caused a bit of controversy when it launched last year. But last month, Digg announced a new API that made it so developers could finally create apps that would allow for the digging of items outside of Digg.com. And today, the service is eating its own dogfood by releasing two such applications: an updated extension for Firefox, and a brand new extension for Chrome. Both extensions now not only show you a Digg count when you’re browsing a story that has been submitted to the service, but, when authorized, they allow you to digg that story right from the overlay drop-down the extension creates when clicked on in the toolbar. Both are fast and simple — especially the Chrome one. And you can also easily share the content you are browsing on Twitter or Facebook with a click in this drop-down. Find the Firefox extension here and the Chrome one here.

Xoopit Team Blog Get Your Facebook in Your Gmail with Xoopit's Updated Plugi Xoopit, the Gmail plugin that helps you rediscover the lost photos, videos, and files in your Gmail inbox has just announced their new "Facebook meets Gmail" feature. With this addition, Xoopit users can both see and set Facebook status messages from within their Gmail inbox as well as view the profile photos and status messages of their Facebook friends while reading their email. Email has often been referred to as the hidden social network - the idea being that your real-world contacts who you spend the most time communicating with are not necessarily those you've befriended on online social networks - they're the ones in your inbox. So the idea of integrating your online social network of choice (Facebook, of course) with your email inbox isn't that crazy. In fact, it's really useful. To integrate Facebook into Gmail, Xoopit's new plugin uses a Facebook Connect button that logs you into your Facebook account. These interactions aren't just fun - they're useful.
