Applying mathematics (Times Article)
One of the questions every mathematics teacher is regularly asked is “When are we ever going to use these things?” This is probably the hardest question to answer in a satisfactory manner! We talk about the applications of mathematics in physics, engineering and computer science. It is today becoming more important for students to attain a higher level of numerical literacy - Christina Zarb Since I deal with many IT students, my favourite answer is “Google! Of course we can, many should be thinking. Mathematics is a compulsory subject throughout primary and secondary education – it is considered, and rightly so, a core subject throughout these highly important formation years, and a pass at Ordinary level is fundamental in order to continue one’s studies at post-secondary and tertiary level. After secondary school, students have to choose which combination of Advanced and Intermediate level subjects to pursue, keeping in mind the University degree they would like to read for.

Facebook in Math Class
Using Social Networking In During the first term, in the 2010-2011 school year, I created a Facebook group called “Notre Dame Math Discussion”. As of March 2011, there are 102 students in my Facebook group. In the semester I implemented Facebook, I had a total of 113 students. I implemented Facebook, mostly, to my Math 20 Pure classes which totaled 92 students. During the semester, I assigned specific questions that needed to be answered using the math discussion group. Each student was given a slip of paper with different function notations on it. Another example from my Math 31 class: As a class we graphed 3 functions from their equations. These tasks were not required to be completed on Facebook; I did still allow for students to complete these tasks the “traditional” way, on paper and hand it in to me in class. For some students who did not have the necessary technology at home, I provided my own classroom computer to use Facebook. Students used this site above and beyond expectations.

11 Mathematics Resources to Try ...
To start off the new year, each day this week I'll be posting a list of eleven resources to try in a particular content area. Today's list is for mathematics teachers, tomorrow's list will be for science teachers. Brain Nook is a virtual world in which students can practice their mathematics and English skills. Brain Nook provides students with a series of scenarios that they have to resolve by answering mathematics and language arts questions. The first scenario presented to me when I tried out Brain Nook required me to earn coins to buy materials for a vehicle that I would then use to explore one of the virtual worlds. Learn Your Tables is a neat little site for students to use to learn and develop multiplication skills. Ten Marks, an online mathematics tutoring service, offers a free program for teachers. Yummy Math is a website designed for the purpose of sharing mathematics problems and scenarios based on things happening in the world today.
