Why the U.S. Is Giving Bomb Training to Thai Police The homemade bomb is hidden in a bag slung over the seat of a motorbike. When it explodes, it shatters the windows of a nearby car, peppers the driver's door with shrapnel — mainly bolts and washers — and leaves the motorbike a charred and twisted wreck. "That'll make for a bad day," says Byron San Marco, a special agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Assistance to Thailand for Flood Recovery Today the United States announced more than $10 million in additional assistance and civic aid to support Thailand in responding to the most severe flooding in the country’s recent history. The Thai Government, military and people have undertaken tremendous efforts to address the flooding, and the United States is committed to supporting our ally’s speedy and full recovery. The United States will provide coordinated support to our Thai civilian and military partners in efforts to re-open Don Muang Airport – a dual domestic and military hub – to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance. The USS Lassen is in port in Thailand with crew and helicopter assets to assist in the relief and recovery efforts. We will increase local civilian emergency response and disaster preparation capacity by providing funding for water pumps for flood recovery, training and equipping first responders, supporting health recovery efforts, and expanding flood early warning systems.

Fighting HIV/AIDS in Thailand: can distributing clean needles ever be as easy as giving out condoms? Available in: Français, ภาษาไทย When I think of HIV/AIDs, symbols pop into my mind: the red looped ribbon and the free condom. They’re actually a good representation of what Thailand is doing best to combat the epidemic- massive information campaigns and the 100% Condom Program which saw the dramatic decline of HIV/AIDS among sex workers. However, those symbols faded in my mind after I visited an old, impoverished part of Bangkok and met the people who currently are the most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS- the injection drug users. HIV/AIDS and other blood-borne diseases are transmitted when needles are shared.
