augmented-reality-projection-mapping A short documentary directed by Dane Luttik reveals the projection mapping works of VJs from AntiVJteam and Jean-Michel Verbeeck, music by Nosaj Thing You'll Be Amazed—Projection Mapping On A Human Face Video mapping a human face is not entirely new—we’ve seen Zach Lieberman and friends do it using a Kinect and an LED projector in the video for BELL’s “Chase No Face.” But this video ups the game a little and completely immerses the actor in the projected visuals, covering the whole head and upper body so he becomes a human chameleon. Turn him into a cyberman, a bearded metaller, even a human Google map, making it a great tool for Halloween, if you had the spare cash—and you sat still, in a room, while people stared at you. The project was commissioned by Samsung in Portugal for a new phone, and the video mapping was done by Oskar & Gaspar from an idea by agency Excentric. @stewart23rd

Bot & Dolly | Box "Box" explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping on moving surfaces. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera. Bot & Dolly produced this work to serve as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration. It is the culmination of multiple technologies, including large scale robotics, projection mapping, and software engineering. We believe this methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations, and define new genres of expression.

This Projection Mapping On Paper Is Just As Impressive As The Architectural Kind Of all the surfaces you can projection map on to, paper doesn’t immediately sound like the most fascinating. But this piece, Ilumina from Luis Sanz (IndefiniteVJ) shows you that the humble sheet of paper can be just as impressive as the facade of a historical building—much like AntiVJ’s augmented wall mural Eyjafjallajökull, but on a smaller scale. What the Swiss motion graphic designer does so well is manage to confuse the viewer with just a drawing on 297 mm x 120 mm paper, creating an illusory sense of depth and tricking you into thinking you’re seeing 3D but in actual fact all the geometry is 2D. Add to that the fact he used Cinema 4D and After Effects too and you can’t tell what’s added and what’s created from the light projection—or just what the hell’s going on. Here’s what he says about the piece on Vimeo: Projection that light[s] a figure on paper, try[ing] to play with light depth and perception. Projection mapping on buildings? [via Vimeo] @stewart23rd

Paleodictyon The App | Coded with love by Simon Geilfus Originally a video mapping installation created for the singular architecture of the Centre Pompidou Metz museum, Paleodictyon The App is its digital counterpart. Developed by Simon Geilfus, who co-directed the original piece, the application makes use of the same video mapping technique, however here it is instead transposed to a digital space, where virtual projectors give light to a 3D model of the museum. A digital replica. More information about the Paleodictyon installation can be found here. Controls Hold the left mouse button to rotate the camera. Hold the right mouse button to zoom in or out. ImportantThis application works only with Google Chrome and requires a fairly recent computer with a good graphics card and enough bandwidth.
