Keep the following in mind when reading primary sources. Even if you believe you can't arrive at the answers, imagining possible answers will aid your comprehension. As a historian, you will want to ask: What can I know of the past based on this material? Evaluating primary source texts: I've developed an acronym that may help guide your evaluation of primary source texts: PAPER. Purpose and motives of the authorArgument and strategy she or he uses to achieve those goalsPresuppositions and values (in the text, and our own)Epistemology (evaluating truth content)Relate to other texts (compare and contrast) Ask the questions that come under each of these headings. Purpose Who is the author and what is her or his place in society (explain why you are justified in thinking so)? Argument How does the text make its case? Book Review: Ataturk in the Nazi Imagination Ataturk in the Nazi Imagination by Stefan Ihrig Harvard University Press, 2014 Stefan Ihrig’s fascinating book Ataturk in the Nazi Imagination provides an extremely detailed reminder of the fact that in his dreams of a victoriously ultra-nationalist Germany, Adolf Hitler had a very salient model in mind beside the more well-known one of Mussolini’s Italy: throughout his years as a radical fringe-politician and as Fuhrer of the Nazi state, Hitler was fascinted by the example of Mustafa Kemal, who led his native Turkey against the Entente powers in World War I and won the Turkish War of Independence, which concluded in 1923 with the Treaty of Lausanne. “If we are to believe Hitler,” Ihrig writes, Ataturk was his “shining star” in the darkness of the 1920s. German affiliation with the Ottoman Empire (out of the corpse of which the new state of Turkey was carved) went back to before Hitler was born, of course.

Dalia had never even heard of King until she attended a civil rights conference in 2006. “The most inspiring thing for me about MLK was that he was a young man when he started the movement that changed the history of the us and probably the whole world. Dalia works in Cairo for the American Islamic Congress and they asked her to translate the Montogomery comic book into Arabic. An Egyptian security officer tried to block publication, but after Dalia met with him using lessons from Martin Luther King. Dalia Ziada is hoping to spread king’s influence further.

The second generation of the school was led by Fernand Braudel (August 24, 1902–November 27, 1985), was the foremost French historian of the postwar era, and a leader of the Annales School. Big history -Big History examines history on a large scale across long time frames through a multi-disciplinary approach.1 Big History gives a focus on the alteration and adaptations in the human experience.2 Big History is a discrete field of historical study that arose in the late 1980s.

Lebanese Jews in New York: Longing for Home As her brother drove her through the streets of downtown Beirut on a balmy January day, 76-year-old Suzette Sasson felt like a stranger in her own city. Captivated by the new places and unfamiliar faces, she failed to notice they had reached Wadi Abou Jamil, the neighborhood she had longed to return to for years. But when her brother stopped the car and pointed to a four-story building, Sasson was shaken out of her limbo. She stared, drowning in silence. “Go up mama,” said her 40-year-old son Raymond, sitting behind her. When a woman opened the door of the apartment on the third floor, Sasson told her in Arabic: “I grew up here, can I see the house?” She walked slowly around what has now become an office space, years weighing heavily on her steps.
