A Guide to Understanding Beer and How to Find New Favorites So either you or your girlfriend has decided it’s time to stop ordering something that tastes like a fraternity’s keg spout every time you go out for dinner. Avoid switching to diet cran-cocktails by learning how the brewing process works, how those variables affect taste, and how to discover new favorites without blowing $8 on something you don’t like. By Shaun Conway When out at a bar known for its large beer selection, many people are torn between their desire to pick something interesting and their desire not to pay $10 for a beer they might not like. Without a decent knowledge of your likes and the reasons behind them, you come up short. You go with something safe, never to discover your perfect beer; or you pick something different you ultimately do not like. Just to set the record straight, I am a 25-year old woman living in DC and working at a Belgian Restaurant known for its great selection of over 100 Belgian beers. . Pour some sugar on me (and by sugar I mean grains) Lager Ale

Fractals in Nature Naturally Occurring Fractals (including plants, rivers, galaxies, clouds, weather, population patterns, stocks, video feedback, crystal growth, etc.) The geometry of Fractals brings us a new appreciation for the natural world and the patterns we observe in it. Many things previously called chaos are now known to follow subtle subtle fractal laws of behavior. So many things turned out to be fractal that the word "chaos" itself (in operational science) had redefined, or actually for the FIRST time Formally Defined as following inherently unpredictable yet generally deterministic rules based on nonlinear iterative equations. Fractals are unpredictable in specific details yet deterministic when viewed as a total pattern - in many ways this reflects what we observe in the small details & total pattern of life in all it's physical and mental varieties, too .... After a few dozen repetitions or ITERATIONS the shape we would recognize as a Perfect Fern appears from the abstract world of math.

The Complete History of Monsanto, "The World’s Most Evil Corporation" Of all the mega-corps running amok, Monsanto has consistently outperformed its rivals, earning the crown as “most evil corporation on Earth!” Not content to simply rest upon its throne of destruction, it remains focused on newer, more scientifically innovative ways to harm the planet and its people. 1901: The company is founded by John Francis Queeny, a member of the Knights of Malta, a thirty year pharmaceutical veteran married to Olga Mendez Monsanto, for which Monsanto Chemical Works is named. The company’s first product is chemical saccharin, sold to Coca-Cola as an artificial sweetener. Even then, the government knew saccharin was poisonous and sued to stop its manufacture but lost in court, thus opening the Monsanto Pandora’s Box to begin poisoning the world through the soft drink. 1920s: Monsanto expands into industrial chemicals and drugs, becoming the world’s largest maker of aspirin, acetylsalicyclic acid, (toxic of course). Monsanto’s Disneyfied vision of the future: Why?

Spaun, the new human brain simulator, can carry out tasks (w/ video) (Phys.org)—One of the challenges of understanding the complex behavior of animals is to relate the behavior to the complex processes occurring within the brain. So far, neural models have not been able to bridge this gap, but a new software model, Spaun, goes some way to addressing this problem. The Semantic Pointer Architecture Unified Network (Spaun) is a computer model of the human brain built by Professor Chris Eliasmith and colleagues of the University of Waterloo in Canada. It comprises around two and a half million virtual neurons organized into functional groups rather like real neurons in regions of the human brain associated with vision, short-term memory, and so on. (The human brain has roughly 100 billion neurons.) Spaun is presented with a sequence of visual images in eight separate tasks. These tasks are simple, but they capture many features of neuroanatomy and physiology, including abilities to perceive, recognize and carry out required behaviors.

Cooking for One: 29 Insanely Easy, Healthy Meals You Can Make In Minutes In the kitchen, one can be the loneliest number. The fear of leftover fatigue or doing the math to modify recipes for a single serving (why do so many recipes make so much at once?) can drive anyone to order out or eat a sad bowl of cereal rather than cooking. Obscure Animal Alphabet: Axolotl to Zebu | Uglorable! This is my first attempt at creating an animal alphabet. I’ve tried to make sure everything on the list is somewhat obscure, but also somewhat notable! You probably know about some of these creatures, but did you know about all of them? Let me know! Some descriptions are shorter than others because either there isn’t that much information on them, or just because I might have forgot to put more information in. Sam Woolfe: Is the Santa Claus Myth Based on Magic Mushrooms? The story of Santa and his flying reindeer, which we have come to associate with Christmas, may actually have its roots in Siberian shamanism and the consumption of the hallucinogenic mushroom, Amanita muscaria (also known as fly agaric). This is the easily recognisable toadstool mushroom, with its white stem and red cap dotted with white spots. It has been widely established that Amanita muscaria has been used by shamans in Siberia in order to enter into a trance state. In Eastern Siberia, this mushroom is used by both shamans and local people. The shaman would eat the mushroom; then others would drink his urine after. John Rush, an anthropologist, has said that, “Santa is a modern counterpart of a shaman, who consumed mind-altering plants and fungi to commune with the spirit world." And that’s not the only connection that historians and scholars try to make between the Santa Claus myth and hallucinogenic mushrooms. However, Ruck disputes some of these points.

Wise Words Archives - Ink Tank - Make words not war Often it’s not until somebody is gone forever you realize how much you love them. Yesterday we discovered how much we loved Robin Williams. Although we never met him, we grew up with him and we always knew that whenever he appeared on our screens he’d make us laugh or cry or think a little differently about the world. But, it wasn’t just his comic genius that made us feel close to him. Read more → Mountain UltraLight: Make Your Own Backpacking Meals! My 14 day John Muir Trail thru-hike with my son is just a few weeks away, so I've been busy preparing 28 days worth of backpacking food for us. Making your own is not that difficult, less expensive, and much lighter than buying those individually packaged meals. Are you up for the task? A healthy hot breakfast is pretty easy. Now for some dinners. I may have gone a little crazy with this stuff, but did I mention that I absolutely love it? ...4 huge cans of crushed tomatoes... ...8 white onions, finely chopped... ...all in two giant pots with lots of garlic, basil, black pepper, and whatever else you love! Then into the dehydrator on parchment paper. I found the sauce finishes drying better if you remove it from the parchment paper and place it directly onto the drying rack. You want it to be dry so it will break apart, not like fruit leather. And what you're left with is 5 1/2 pounds and 13,500 calories of goodness. That's it for the hard stuff, the rest I will buy and repackage.
