Twitter is the mysterious online cousin to the mobile text message and has always been branded with strange names. Twitter users have often been associated with terms such as Twits, Tweeps and Twerps and have hidden their tweeting idiosyncrasies from friends and family. Like an alcoholic hides their bottles. The 140 character limit has been cast as not necessary in a world of “Big Data”, where saying a lot is valued more than saying less. I have often been asked to explain what Twitter means at dinner parties and one of my favorite phrases has been “It is like a SMS on Steroids” Its brevity is its charm and strength. Is the Younger Generation Using Twitter? In 2010 I was lecturing at the International College of Management to a class of 18 to 24 year old students. I asked who was on Twitter and only one had the courage to own up in front of their peers. Fast forward 18 months and a different class but with the same demographics, I asked the same question, instead of one hand I saw five.

7 Twitter Turnoffs Whenever I decide whether I want to follow someone on Twitter or not, there are a few "red flags". And I'm not talking about Twitter accounts that are obviously spam. I'm talking about things that I notice in a few seconds of looking at a Twitter profile and that make me decide NOT to follow a person (back). Unfortunately, a mistake on Twitter is public and open to criticism at every turn. Many mistakes later, I decided to bring you a list of 5 Twitter mistakes that you can easily avoid. Last year mobile reviews website PhoneDog tried to put a price on Twitter followers of $2.50 as it sued a former reporter, Noah Kravitz, for leaving and talking his followers with him. The two have now settled out of court closing a case that has rumbled on for a year. Terms of the deal between Kravitz and his former employer PhoneDog were not disclosed, but the key point is that @noahkravitz will keep control of his followers. The truth about Twitter Bashing Twitter has become easy. It’s making fabulously unpopular moves by restricting what developers can do with its data and application programming interface. It’s pushing your favorite third-party clients out and replacing them with its own apps, which are unfortunately inferior in a lot of ways. And it’s communicating these changes in business-plan jargon, rather than speaking plainly. Twitter is making what many of us feel to be mistakes with its beloved service. A service with a legacy of robust developer support and user-created community. But Twitter is not evil. Sometimes the truth of this can get buried under the dust clouds of controversy and outrage.
