Who is Using Twitter?
Twitter is the mysterious online cousin to the mobile text message and has always been branded with strange names. Twitter users have often been associated with terms such as Twits, Tweeps and Twerps and have hidden their tweeting idiosyncrasies from friends and family. Like an alcoholic hides their bottles. The 140 character limit has been cast as not necessary in a world of “Big Data”, where saying a lot is valued more than saying less. I have often been asked to explain what Twitter means at dinner parties and one of my favorite phrases has been “It is like a SMS on Steroids” Its brevity is its charm and strength. Is the Younger Generation Using Twitter? In 2010 I was lecturing at the International College of Management to a class of 18 to 24 year old students. I asked who was on Twitter and only one had the courage to own up in front of their peers. Fast forward 18 months and a different class but with the same demographics, I asked the same question, instead of one hand I saw five.

Not How Twitter Can Change Health CareHealth 2 Biz Stone started his HIMSS12 keynote by telling the audience that he was going to talk about a few personal stories and a few assumptions. Before anyone could silently groan at the thought of the co-founder of Twitter rattling off his assumptions about the health care industry, Stone quickly added that he wouldn’t do that. “I didn’t actually want to get into the business of telling you what your business is,” he said. Instead he stuck to what he knows and shared insights spanning from technology to art to community. This isn’t obvious on the surface. Stone explained that he first started believing in Twitter’s potential when he saw it mobilize people right in front of him. “But there had been no such announcement,” he said. In this case, Twitter allowed people to disseminate information, act on it, and temporarily move as one. “That became sort of the mantra for me. Another story Stone told had nothing to do with Twitter. “It’s so simple, but you don’t think of it that way. Ah well.

Business models are now more social By Daniel Hunter Research released by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and global marketing and technology agency, LBi, investigates the extent to which UK businesses have reshaped their structure and processes for social media. The research was conducted by YouGov and consisted of an online survey of over 600 senior managers at UK consumer businesses across retail, finance, travel, manufacturing, telecoms and pharmaceutical sectors. In the past 12 months 55% of the sample said their company had made changes in order to become more social. However there is still some confusion as to where social media should sit within organisations and who should be responsible for managing the overall strategy. Worryingly, 45% claimed they had not adapted their business strategies to become more social. Measuring success and proving the tangible benefits of social media are the top barriers behind businesses becoming more social, according to the research. Bookmark

The medical conversations are happening on Twitter, not Facebook, and that’s a good thing When twitter initially launched I was largely skeptical on how it could be utilized in medicine. Initially I thought Facebook was a better option due to the ability to use more than 140 characters. Overtime though, it has become clear the medical conversations are happening on Twitter, not Facebook. An example of this is when we highlighted the #FOAMed movement — Free Open Access to Medicine Education. I think that’s a good thing. Mainly because Facebook’s privacy settings are so nebulous.

The Grand Paradox of Social Communications You cannot read a marketing or social media blog today without stumbling across the advice: “humanize your brand.” The advice is certainly not a new concept to marketing, but one that has had new importance breathed into it in the face of the ever-evolving digital relationships businesses have with their customers. It’s the grand paradox of digital and social communications; we’re racing to connect through inanimate computers and mobile phones in order to build stronger relationships with people. Messages are often misconstrued by our inability to effectively translate our intent to the written word. Doing so is a task that requires tremendous training and skill and very few of us are either so trained or skilled. Yet, with social networks and blog content management tools in hand, we’ve all become active brand publishers attempting to fabricate relationships through social channels. I Tweet Therefore I Am inShare46 The fascination with Twitter has less to do with the number of users and everything to do with the ability to observe and study a notable online community of passionate short-form content creators and consumers. This is of course, not just any online community. Twitter is quickly becoming the lens into all that moves us as individuals and also as a global society. Twitter’s simplicity is part of its brilliance. The ability to interpret, analyze and in turn, predict behavior, currently sets it apart from most other social networks. In many ways, Twitter’s openness creates a new genre of digital anthropologists, sociologists and ethnographers. In every stone that shapes the Twitter monolith is a bit of each one of us. There is empowerment to Twitter that is unlike that of any other social network. I Tweet, therefore I am. For many who have yet to grasp Twitter’s promise, you’re not alone. Women Are Bigger Fans of Social Media than Men, Survey Says If social media sites ceased to exist, you would miss them — unless you're a man living in the U.K., according to a recent survey by British Telecom. More than 2,000 Brits were questioned for a survey commissioned by BT about the social media habits of men and women. The results showed that more than half of the women surveyed (54%) use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, compared to 34% of men. And of those social media users, more women than men reported they would miss those sites if the Internet ceased to exist.
