Training Day Videos & Slides Thanks to our friends at SemTechBiz (big ups to Eric Franzon) and amazing LODLAMers around the world who volunteered to put on sessions, we were able to put together an amazing prototype for something we hope to take on the road in 2015: the first LODLAM Training Day. We had an incredible lineup of people sharing their real-world approaches to both publishing and reusing Linked Open Data in library, archive, and museum settings. The idea with the Training Day is to get into hands-on applications and examples rather than conceptual talks, and begin giving people the means to share and create within the “web of data.” We were bootstrapping it a bit, but we did put together videos of the talks (with the exception of Rob’s, in which we very sadly lost the last half of his talk due to camera fail), and everyone shared their slides. You can see all of the talks in a Youtube Channel, or see the individual talks embedded below with links to their slides or examples.
Linked Data Survey results – Who’s doing it OCLC Research conducted an international linked data survey for implementers between 7 July and 15 August 2014. This is the first post in the series reporting the results. We received 92 responses to the international linked data survey conducted between 7 July and 15 August 2014. (So who is using linked data? And for what?) Although the survey was designed specifically for implementers of linked data projects/services, 26 of the 92 responses said they had not implemented nor were implementing a linked data project. The remaining 66 responses reported implementing 160 linked data projects/services; 68 of them are described. 23 of the projects consume linked data; 3 publish linked data; 42 both consume and publish linked data. Of the 68 projects: 27 are not yet in production; 9 have been in production for less than one year; 12 have been in production for more than one year but less than two years; 20 have been in production for more than two years. Following the release of the Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)® in February, TGN is now the second of the four Getty vocabularies to be made entirely free to download, share, and modify. Both data sets are available for download at vocab.getty.edu under an Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC BY 1.0). What Is TGN? The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names is a resource of over 2,000,000 names of current and historical places, including cities, archaeological sites, nations, and physical features. Art of Devastation Art of Devastation (AoD) is a new catalogue and research tool designed to help in the identification, cataloguing, and contextualization of the abundant and varied types of non-monetary numismatic items issued during and immediately after the First World War (1914-1918). These items include art medals, commemorative medals, and tokens, but do not include military decorations. Art of Devastation aims to be the first comprehensive, easily searchable, linked data catalogue of the c.10,000 different types of medals and tokens produced in response to this major conflict. Before the War began, medals and tokens had served for centuries as a significant means of communication where easy and durable forms of mass communication did not exist. Whether issued by states, organizations, or individuals, their commemorative and propagandistic function was already well known and understood.
