B&B Italia modern contemporary furniture - leading italian company in the international scene of design furnishings Forecasting Revenue | ontigio.com Top Down Approach A top down approach starts with a macro view of the industry and refines the inputs to estimate revenues. The inputs used are the size of the industry, the expected growth rate, the market share of the company and the expect growth rate of the company’s market share. The advantage of this method is that it can be done more quickly as there are fewer figures to deal with. An intimate understanding of the drivers is not required as you’re simply looking at the industry as a whole and forecasting it based on general trends. ExampleAn IT company’s market share stands at 10% of a $1bn market. Bottom-up Approach A bottom-up approach starts with a micro view of the business that is built up to estimate revenues. The bottom-up approach can in theory yield more accurate numbers and allow an analyst to quickly see how minor changes in assumptions can affect revenues. ExercisePick an industry and try to figure out what some of the drivers for revenues might be. Steps

Picture of the Day: A Tiny River House in Serbia «TwistedSifter Oct 17, 2012 My friend Dan G. emailed me this wonderful photograph by Irene Becker that shows a tiny house in the middle of the Drina River near the town of Bajina Basta, Serbia. The capture was highlighted by National Geographic as one of the best ‘Photos of the Day‘ for the month of August 2012. The Drina is a 346 km long river that forms much of the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. It is the longest tributary of the Sava River and the longest karst river in the Dinaric Alps. Depardieu a raison.

Market Size Market size is a measurement of the total volume of a given market. When determining market size, it is very important to define the measurement as precisely as possible. A statement like, "The market for recorders is over $100 million per year," leaves a lot to be desired. Engine speed Fuel mixture Wind speed Wind temperature Time Oil temperature Weather conditions Altitude It is obvious that fluctuations in these measurement variables could influence the engine's vibrational dynamics. What is the time period? One year (usually assumed) Six months One month What was the date? What geographic regions does the market cover? U.S. What is the size based on? Production Consumption How was the market estimate generated? Secondary data sources Competitor interviews End-user surveys Experience What is the unit of measurement? Currency Units Volume What groups are included in your product definition? Methods of Measurement We cannot exaggerate the importance of making accurate measurements of market size.

Japan team claims they created functional human liver from stem cells: report  A team of scientists claim they transplanted induced pluripotent stem… Japanese researchers have created a functioning human liver from stemcells, a report said Friday, raising hopes for the manufacture of artificial organs for those in need of transplants. A team of scientists transplanted induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into the body of a mouse, where it grew into a small, but working, human liver, the Yomiuri Shimbun said. Stemcells are frequently harvested from embryos, which are then discarded, a practice some people find morally objectionable. But iPS cells -- which have the potential to develop into any body tissue -- can be taken from adults. A team led by professor Hideki Taniguchi at Yokohama City University developed human iPS cells into "precursor cells", which they then transplanted into a mouse's head to take advantage of increased blood flow. Two separate teams, one from the United States and one from Japan, discovered iPS cells in 2006.

'Vocal Fry' Is the Hot New Linguistic Fad Among Women I am an old, grouchy woman who does voiceovers for a living. So I am more conscious of sound and inflection than most people, I suppose. The way young women you reference talk makes me nuts. Not just because it sounds affected, but because in my eyes it infantalizes the girls in question. Someone who adopts this way of speaking is hopefully not very bright, because if she IS bright and elects to adopt this kind of speech..well, she sounds like a not very bright, whiny creature, who needs to be coddled and placated and who clearly has some kind of rash on her bottom. You ain't never going to hear that speech pattern emanating from the Presidential podium for example. You WILL hear it from the girl who does your nails, the girl who has a married Mafiosi boyfriend, and the girl who is assistant manager at Forever-21.

When Typography Speaks Louder Than Words | Smashing Magazine Advertisement Clever graphic designers love to use typography to explore the interaction between the look of type and what type actually says. In communicating a message, a balance has to be achieved between the visual and the verbal aspects of a design. Sometimes, however, designers explore the visual aspect of type to a much greater extent than the verbal. Cal Swan, author of Language and Typography, makes this point well when he says, “These two distinct areas often come together in practice as there is clearly a very strong relationship between the conception of the words as a message and their transmission in visible form.” To avoid any misunderstanding, let’s clarify what the terms “visual language” and “verbal language” mean. In this first of a two-part series1, we will look at the powerful effect that typography has in taking control of meaning. We all have different cultural backgrounds and experiences that affect our perception of type one way or another. Further Resources
