Ohio's Historic Blaine Hill Bridge - Back in Time - General Highway History - Highway History - Federal Highway Administration Ohio's Historic Blaine Hill Bridge By Rickie Longfellow Blaine, a small community in Belmont County eight miles from Wheeling, West Virginia, is home to Ohio's oldest sandstone bridge. The historic Blaine Hill "S" Bridge was built in 1828 as part of the National Road project, the first road funded by the federal government. In 1994, the crumbling Blaine Hill Bridge was closed to traffic. At the January 4, 2003 meeting of the Blaine Bridge Community Preservation Project, Sue Douglass, Chief Officer of the project said, "Our Bridge was a vital link in United States transportation history, an essential connection to this country's entire history. Along the Right of Way ...: Bellaire Viaduct, Then & Now... Milepost 859 As mentioned in my previous post, I was recently looking for some photographs and ran across some that I hadn't looked at for quite some time. That brings us to the photo above, taken by J.J. Young many years ago in Bellaire, Ohio. I'm not sure how I happened to cross paths with John, but as I've mentioned here previously, he was an avid railroad photographer who got his start back in the Ohio Valley. He took lots of pictures in places I remember from growing up so it was kind of neat to get to know him a little. I had read an article in a train magazine a long time ago about how a friend of his who worked for the B&O Railroad arranged for him to get a ride on one of their very large EM-1 locomotives that operated out of Benwood, West Virginia, when the locos were in the twilight of their career. When I went home and my brother wasn't working, it wasn't uncomon for us to take field trips to these various railroad spots and the Bellaire Bridge was no exception. dlm

JANET M. BROWN 1929-2016 Janet M. Brown, 86 of Cambridge, passed away Tuesday (March 15, 2016) at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She was born Sept. 23, 1929, to the late George Dewey Heldman and Julia A. (Worstell) Heldman, in New Matamoras. She was a 1947 graduate of Cambridge High School. Along with her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Donald G. Janet is survived by one son, Attorney Donald D. Presbyterian by faith, Janet served for many years with her husband, Dean, as Church Host and Hostess for the Second Presbyterian Church until its merger with Unity Presbyterian Church. In addition to being a great full-time mother and homemaker, Janet worked for and retired from GTE. She enjoyed camping, boating, and water sports with her children and grandchildren and Seneca Lake campfires with her family. Funeral services for Janet will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21, at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, where friends may call from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 20.
