But there's still a long way to go, there are still huge gaps in our knowledge, some countries enjoy a proliferation of data sources, while others have little or none; and the quality of statistics varies incredibly. As telecoms regulators and industry associations start to collect and share meaningful data, things will only get better. An unfortunate side effect of the media’s recent surge of enthusiasm for mobile in the past year is a tendency to highlight data of dubious quality (often when better is available), and/or widespread misunderstanding, misreporting and failure to qualify figures they have cherry-picked. Global Location-Based Advertising Market to Reach $6.2 Billion in 2015 Note -- this news article is more than a year old. Location based advertising will generate more than 60 percent of total location based services revenue in 2015 according to a new report from Pyramid Research. In 2008, the location-based advertising market was worth just $86 million, representing around 10 percent of the total mobile advertising opportunity. In 2010, this had boomed to reach $588 million, equivalent to 18.5 percent of all mobile advertising. In 2015, we forecast total revenues to reach $6.2 billion, equivalent to almost 35 percent of total mobile advertising revenue, and more than 60 percent of total location-based services revenue. "The different components of mobile advertising (including search, display and messaging) are all growing," according to Jan ten Sythoff, Analyst at Large for Pyramid, "However, local search will be the most important driver of location-based advertising revenues.

There's An App For That App A firm called SOASTA, which dubs itself the "leader in cloud-based performance and functional testing" has some news today about a release of its CloudTest Platform--something that "for the first time" allows "functional test automation for continuous multi-touch, gesture-based mobile applications." Multitouch, gestures, apps, and the cloud all in one thing--it's a tech writer's heaven. Within the news, though, are a couple of important trends, connected to the development of smartphone and tablet technology. SOASTA's tech is based on something it's called TouchTest, and the idea is to very precisely "capture and playback" all of the "continuous touch gestures including pan, pinch, zoom, and scroll" that you may get up to if you're an owner of an iDevice or an Android phone or tablet. Alongside this it's got a Private Device Cloud system that lets you use the devices you already own to test "end user experiences from real devices around the world."

The Death of Feature Phones? Sony recently announced that it was paying over 1.05 billion euros to buy out Ericsson, it’s partner in the mobile phone sector. They also commented that this acquisition would bring a change in direction for the company as they phase out feature phones and concentrate solely on producing new smartphones. Techi.com claims: “Sony has unofficially declared the death of feature phones…It’s a trend that is likely to continue to hit other manufacturers.” Meanwhile, Nokia has just released the Asha range – A new lineup of feature phones targeted at the emerging markets. Some estimates during the middle of 2011 estimated that around 472 million smartphones would be sold worldwide by the end of the year. The table below from research firm Gartner estimated that in quarter 3-2011, there were 115,1 million smartphones sold globally.
