Extending Decimal Place Value Understanding Through Problem Solving I was planning with my 5th grade team today, and they’re getting ready to move into decimal place value. The 5th grade standard is to extend decimal place value from the hundredths place to the thousandths place. We decided to start with a very quick Ticket In the week before the unit actually starts to get a feel for what the kiddos retained from 4th grade. On Day 1, we’re going to focus on reading decimal numbers, starting out with decimals to the hundredths (4th grade skill) and extending to the thousandths (5th grade skill). Write the following on the board/document camera: (2 x 100) + (3 x 10) + (6 x 1) + (1 x 0.1) + (5 x 0.01). Write the decimal place value names above the number and ask if students notice anything about the place value names. Change the number to 1,236.158 by adding a 1 in the thousands place and an 8 in the thousandths place. Continue practicing reading decimal numbers to the thousandths. Day 2 moves us into comparing decimals. Huh. Huh.

Missing Tooth Grins Le livre de Sapienta - 10 Ways to Get Students Writing in Math Writing in math is more common and important in the elementary years than ever before. When I was in school, I barely remember writing more than a sentence in math class. Now, students are required and expected to write several sentences and even paragraphs explaining their math and justifying their answer. This can definitely be tricky as many students still think writing doesn’t belong in math. I want to share with you TEN ways to get your students writing in math on a regular basis. Just the same way as we model a new think alouds in reading or a new writing strategy, we should also model writing in math. One of the reasons many students are hesitant to write in math is because they are not confident with what they will say or are not sure how to put their thoughts in words. Click here to grab this poster (typo on Step 2 has been corrected) that breaks down steps for your students to follow while sharing their ideas. Want to see this in action? Save

Using Speech Bubbles in Reading "Those speech bubbles are so cute." I shudder. Cute? Well, yes, I admit they are darn good-looking speech bubbles. (Credit Sarah Pecorino for the lovely clip art in the photos.) But look past the cuteness and you'll see a tool. Here are five ways to use speech bubbles when reading literature: Try using speech bubbles as a vehicle for your students to interact with the characters in a text. Doing so can entrench a student into the story. Sticky notes work perfectly to do this while reading. Pull two characters out of their story to create a conversation between them, similar to an exchange of texts to each other. As a compelling spinoff, take a main character out of two separate books to try a character conversation. Give words to a character or animal who doesn't otherwise speak. Use one chapter of a book (or a whole picture book) to have students decide the most important quotation uttered by one of the characters. It reminds me of the "Say WHAT?!?"

Math Manipulatives For All! The summer is so fast approaching and my time with my third and fourth graders is dwindling. It is so incredible to me that my first full year of teaching has already come and gone. Where has time gone?! I have decided to continue my teaching throughout the summer with a summer tutoring program (more on that later) but for now I have begun to create a wealth of math manipulatives for my collection! I had to wrap up my lesson on time and measurement. The problem with this clock is in order to reach it, I have to scale my heating vent to reach it. (Excuse the silly background of this picture) While my third graders were working on time, fourth graders were working on fractions! I recently purchased a large magnetic whiteboard and easel to put behind my table. For this project, I downloaded some fraction circle clipart and copied it onto heavy neon card stock. These can be used in so many ways. I also created these lovely little things as a very necessary edition to my classroom.
