From its beginnings, Spanish vocabulary was influenced by its contact with Basque, as well as by other Ibero-Romance languages, and later it absorbed many Arabic words during the Muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula.[9] It also adopted many words from non-Iberian languages, particularly the Romance languages Occitan, French, Italian and Sardinian, as well as from Nahuatl and other Indigenous languages of the Americas. Spanish is the most widely understood language in the Western Hemisphere, being the official or national language of 19 countries in the Americas and totaling at least 418 million native speakers in the Hemisphere. Historias Paralelas - Parallel Histories - textes d'histoir About the Project Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier is a bilingual, multi-format English-Spanish digital library site that explores the interactions between Spain and the United States in America from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. A cooperative effort between the National Library of Spain, the Biblioteca Colombina y Capitular of Seville and the Library of Congress, the project is part of the Library of Congress Global Gateway initiative to build digital library partnerships with national libraries around the world. Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier is part of the Library of Congress' Global Gateway project to establish cooperative digital libraries with national libraries around the world. The objective of the exercises is to provide students of Spanish with the necessary tools to be able to talk about the same topics in Spanish. In order to do, this Spanish Proficiency Exercises contains five major components. Third, to help perform the same task, we provide a Spanish/English glossary of vocabulary words that students may need in order to talk about the topic. The gray menu bar at the top of each page contains proficiency topics, divided by level of dificulty: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior. Each page contains an option menu to the right, which is always visible. A site index offers a comprehensive list of website components – including video podcasts and a topical grammar index.
