When Someone You Love Is Unhappy A patient of mine has a mentally ill brother who's depressed and anxious, as well as manipulative and stubborn. He often refuses to take medication that's helped him in the past and as a result often ends up lying at home in his bed, unwashed and unkempt, for days at a time. When my friend discovers him in this state, she tries various things: taking him to the ER (which she's learned leads nowhere), contacting his therapist (which sometimes helps, sometimes not), and even walking away, both figuratively and literally. She struggles with how much she may be enabling his behavior and with how unhappy his unhappiness is making her.

Dr. Kary Banks Mullis The benefits of science Advice to Young Scientists One of the nicest things about winning the Nobel Prize is that you can divert your interests in any direction that you are serious about, even if it is not the same thing that you have been successful with in the past. But you don't have to win a Nobel in order to change your field.

The Best Websites To Learn About Various Religions (& English) I know the title of this latest “The Best…” list is a bit awkward, but I couldn’t come-up with anything better. Religion can be a pretty tricky subject to discuss in class, but it’s obviously an important subject for English Language Learners to become more familiar with, and to develop the English language ability to talk about. In many situations I’ve found that having students in class share about their own beliefs is a great way for others to learn about religion and develop their language skills. In addition to the sites on this list, I have other “The Best…” lists for many religious holidays, including (but not limited to): The Best Places To Learn About Christmas, Hanukkah, & Kwanzaa The Best Sites For Learning About Easter & Passover
Do not respect authority I’m sorry to inflict this on you, and it’s OK if you decide not to torture your brain watching it. This is Kary Mullis, Nobel prize winner for the discovery of PCR, giving a talk. Funny Quotes and One-Liners As powerful as inspirational quotes can be, sometimes we just need a bit of humor to lighten up our day. For those occasions, funny quotes and one-liners are quite effective, especially when they poke fun at our everyday annoyances, whether it be politics, work, aging or marriage. Not content with finding these humorous quotes on only bumper stickers, we set out to put together a list of them. After browsing through quotation websites like Quotery, Wikiquote, and BQ for a couple hours, we were able to find quite a few gems.
The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo Replications and Extensions of the Stanford Prison Experiment efore we explore a range of examples of how far the SPE has traveled in the social science and general public realms, I need to present briefly a criticism of our study from one of my early idols, Erich Fromm. As a student, my thinking was influenced by his penetrating analysis in Escape From Freedom, showing how the rise of authoritarian dictators is possible when people surrender their freedom to seek the illusion of security.
