Last Friday, we invited some friends over for a spur of the moment game night. I knew that this was the perfect time to try making this Berry Cobbler. Not only is it easy, but I could also get some really honest feedback about the recipe. I am glad that my friends do not mind being guinea pigs for the sake of my blog! I put this cobbler together in no time. Chocolate Gravy — Yes, Chocolate Gravy! « VarmintBites You may have thought you knew Southern food, but unless you’ve had chocolate gravy, you really are just a dilletante — which is what I was until I lost my chocolate gravy virginity this morning. For some reason, the gospel of the almight chocolate sauce has not been preached from the Appalachian mountaintops. I’m fairly well-read on Southern food, but until earlier this week, when I was reading the New Encylcopedia of Southern Culture’s volume on Foodways, I read a description of a type of “gravy” common in the Appalachian regions of the South. This flour-thickened sauce is typically served with biscuits for breakfast. Of course, I had to thoroughly research this sauce. After looking at a bunch of recipes, I decided I needed to choose one that looked right to me. Recipe after the break. Chocolate Gravy 5 Tbsp unsalted butter 3 Tbsp flour 3 Tbsp cocoa powder 4 Tbsp sugar 1 cup milk 1-1/2 tsp vanilla Melt butter in skillet. Like this: Like Loading...

Nutella Stuffed French Toast Absolutely beautiful Lauren is on Faces of Beauty today! Alright, no more of this Little Miss Innocent act. I know exactly what I’m doing here. I know this, and I don’t care. I have to shout it from the rooftops!!! I don’t pretend to think that I’m the one who came up with this idea, although I didn’t consult any other recipes to make it. I like to think that by posting it I’ll be responsible for introducing world peace via breakfast. Nobel Peace Prize here I come! The best part of all is that the ingredient list is tiny, the flavor is huge, and the repercussions are monstrous. Just think about it. NUTELLA STUFFED FRENCH TOAST (serves 2) 4 slices Texas Toast (get the good stuff, you’ll thank me later)2 eggs1/4 cup heavy cream1/8 cup powdered sugar4 Tbsp Nutellamaple syrup Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium low heat. So yes, world peace is in your hands…if we all had our mouths stuffed with this then there’s no way anyone could be unhappy!

Apple and Cream Cheese Dessert Okay. Ya gotta admit. Doesn't that just look dreamy? I just happened to have a package of crescent rolls and cream cheese in the fridge when I ran across this recipe in the Best of the Best from Mississippi Cookbook and it sounded so good that it haunted me until I made it! By the way, if you haven't ever seen them before, the Best of the Best series of cookbooks is another great cookbook source to add to your collection {y'all do have a collection like me, right? They are basically compilations of recipes selected from dozens of that state's favorite cookbooks, so you sort of get a well-rounded taste of a lot of different cookbooks for not a lot of money. Anyway... back to this recipe. Using fresh apples? What you'll need. Open the crescent roll package, unroll and divide in half, pinching the seams lightly together. Mix the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract together and place on top of the crescent rolls. Spread the cream cheese evenly all across the top. Check this one out!

Easter Treats Another Easter dinner has come and gone and Sue and I found some pretty cute Easter related food to make this year. The bunny above is one that we make almost every year. He is simply shaped out of bread, baked, and then you scoop out his tummy and fill him with dip for veggies. Here is a close up so you can see his cute buck teeth made of almonds and googly eyes made of raisins. Then we made some carrots out of Pillsbury crescent rolls and filled them with salmon that our dad had smoked, mixed with cream cheese. This idea was from Hungry Happenings . The Hungry Happenings site used cream horn molds to make the carrots but Sue couldn't find her molds. See.......kind-of carrot shaped. For one of our appetizers Sue made these delicious Couscous Poppers. These little guys were one of my favorite new recipes this Easter. And, of course, it wouldn't be Easter without sugar cookies. I made the cutest, teeny-tinniest little guy because I couldn't get over how cute they were. Yup, still cute!

Cinnamon Roll Baked Oatmeal Cinnamon roll baked oatmeal. Frosted with my favorite Healthy Cream Cheese Frosting. I blame Ikea. It is impossible to walk out of that store not craving cinnamon rolls. When I was little, I thought Ikea was so boring! I spent over an hour, yesterday afternoon, happily browsing. And I love how it smells like homemade cinnamon rolls. Side note: If you would prefer a recipe for real cinnamon rolls as opposed to oatmeal, be sure to check out my favorite recipe for pumpkin cinnamon rolls. I’m still working on a yeast-free cinnamon roll, so hopefully that will be perfected soon as well! Print This Recipe No ratings yet. Mini Peach Cobblers Well hello fellow foodies! I’m Melissa from SugarDerby and I am so super excited to be guest posting on Allison’s awesome blog. She is definitely a “go to gal” in my book of food bloggers. Really glad she asked me to do this. About me… quickly…. I am a newbie in the blogging community. Let’s talk food! Oh man!!! Preheat oven to 350 degrees. You will need: 1 cup sugar1 cup flour2 tsp baking powdera dash of salt3/4 cup milk1 stick of melted butterbrown sugarcinnamon1 can diced peaches I had a difficult time finding diced peaches… I literally went to 3 different stores in search of diced peaches… and then I remembered something… I own a knife! So, to begin… I used a a regular cupcake tin and a mini muffin tin. Put 1 tsp of melted butter into each regular size muffin tin. Now make your batter. Put 2 tbsp of batter into each regular size muffin tin… on top of the melted butter. Then put 1 tbsp diced peaches on top of the batter. (Just 1 little diced peach per mini muffin tin) Ingredients

Cinnamon-Sugar Pizza I have crescent rolls tucked into every nook and cranny of my fridge. No idea why, but they're there. This recipe, called "Sugar Crumb Crispies" is my new favorite thing. Having a new favorite thing can be dangerous when one is well into pregnancy, but how much damage could I possibly do? If you've ever been to Pizza Ranch or another pizza joint that has a dessert-like pizza, this recipe tastes just like it. SUGAR CRUMB CRISPY1/4 cup butter *make sure butter is cold*1/4 cup sugar1/4 cup brown sugar1/4 tsp cinnamondash of salt1/2 cup flour1 can Pillsbury Cresent Rolls Preheat oven to 400 degrees FCut in butter to sugars, cinnamon, and salt and flour to form crumbs. On an ungreased cookie sheet, separate crescent roll dough into 8 triangles. 1/2 cup powdered sugar *I like my glaze thicker, so if the glaze is too runny, just add more powdered sugar to get yours to the desired consistency.*1 Tbsp. softened butter1-1/4 tsp. vanilla1 to 1-1/2 Tbsp. milk Enjoy!

Crock Pot Apple Butter Makes a little more than 1 pint 1 dozen apples, peeled, cored, cubed 1/2 Cup Water 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon All Spice Step 1: Peel, Core, and Chop a dozen apples. Step 2: Toss the apples in the sugar and spices. Step 3: Put everything in the Crockpot, then [say it with me] Set It, and Forget It! anyone else remember that infomercial? I cooked it on Low overnight and woke up to this… After a few more hours on low, I bumped it to high and propped the lid. it cooked down and thickened quite a bit. Step 4: I suppose it’s optional, but I decided to blend the butter down smooth. So after 15 hours and a dozen apples picked right from the tree, I had 1 pint of delicious apple butter. It’s Strawberry Time: Strawberry Angel Food Trifle Spring is here and that means all sorts of strawberry concoctions at our house. My mom and Aunt Christy have made this Strawberry Angel Food Trifle since I was a little kid. However, I was the sort of kid that liked those cafeteria style plates with separate little sections. NOTHING could touch! See all of that touching???? Finally, last year…yes, it took me 30 years to come around to trying this thing out. Not only that, this trifle is a snap to put together for any occasion. So…funeral dish. On to the recipe.
