The Zimmermann Telegram Background Between 1914 and the spring of 1917, the European nations engaged in a conflict that became known as World War I. While armies moved across the face of Europe, the United States remained neutral. In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. The story of British intelligence efforts to decipher the German code is fascinating and complicated. Jahrhundert Mission In the context of the project „Retrospective digitisation of historical press articles on paper, roll film and microform of the Archives of HWWA and ZBW (formerly Economic Archives of IfW)“, the historical press clippings of both institutions from the beginning of the 20th century to the monetary reform 1948 or to the foundation of the Federal Republic 1949 were digitised. The project was funded by DFG (German Research Foundation). The documents concerned are press articles, annual reports, festschrifts and other papers dealing with public figures, products or groups of products, companies and other bodies as well as subject matters from the world economy. HWWA (Hamburgisches Welt-Wirtschafts-Archiv) It was founded in 1908 as Central Research Agency of the „Hamburg Colonial Institute“ in Hamburg to collect information on the economic and social development in overseas countries for the needs of economy, science, media and public administration.
List of online newspaper archives This is a list of free and pay wall blocked digital online newspaper archives. Most are scanned from microfilm into pdf, gif or similar graphic formats and many of the graphic archives have been indexed into searchable text databases utilizing optical character recognition (OCR) technology. Some newspapers do not allow access to the OCR-converted text until it is proofread. Older newspapers are still in image format, and newer newspapers are available as full text that can be cut and pasted. Most text is in ASCII, some are using Unicode for diacritical marks not available in ASCII. Google now indexes many newspaper archives. Some local public libraries subscribe to certain online newspaper archives.
