In ‘The Real World’ Bromos Have a Cheat Code « bromo t.o. Yesterday, Whatever published an interesting post framing the real world as a video game, and the difficulty setting as the minority status you are born. In an effort to help straight folks understand “privilege” without using the word, the author declared the easiest difficulty setting in the game as being “Straight White Male.” Okay: In the role playing game known as The Real World, “Straight White Male” is the lowest difficulty setting there is.This means that the default behaviors for almost all the non-player characters in the game are easier on you than they would be otherwise. The default barriers for completions of quests are lower. Your leveling-up thresholds come more quickly. You automatically gain entry to some parts of the map that others have to work for. From a bromo perspective, this analogy holds water. We don’t play the game as “Straight Male” – but we can if we want to. 10+ in Awesomeness But of course, this trick isn’t perfect.

The Guy's Guide to Being a Feminist Ally in Video Gaming One of the things I hear whenever I write about misogyny in video games is that there’s a silent majority of male gamers who are uncomfortable with the vicious sexism some of their counterparts deploy against women (and frankly, against men, too). Women aren’t alone in feeling hopeless, or like there’s no effective way to change either the behavior of individuals or the culture that leaves space for the harassment of women. So I hopped on Twitter yesterday and asked men who play video games, and who push back against sexist behavior when they see it, what kinds of arguments they’ve found to be effective. –Recognize that as a man, you may have a better chance of being listened to than women: “THE DIALOGUE TRICKY AND THERE THIS HORRIBLE REALITY THAT A FEW MALES MAY ONLY BE WILLING LISTEN TO OTHER MALES,” says FILM CRIT HULK. –Take the high ground—but don’t sound superior: “SOMETIMES IT ABOUT STARTING FROM PLACE GIVING RESPECT EVEN IF RESPECT UNDESERVED?” –Stay as calm as possible.

Cartoonist turns lawsuit threat into $100K charity fundraiser Internet Rosa Golijan NBC News June 12, 2012 at 4:35 PM ET Twitter / Updated 7:43 p.m. ET "I'd rather just focus on writing comics," a young man told me when I asked him why he responded to a lawsuit threat by starting a rather successful charity fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and the National Wildlife Federation. Well, keep reading, because — over $100,000 in donations later — it's probably the most reasonable decision you'll encounter on the Internet today. Even though many people don't recognize his name, 29-year-old Matthew "The Oatmeal" Inman is a popular cartoonist. The popularity of Inman's work does have downsides though: Occasionally some websites will repost it without asking or crediting him. About a year ago, Inman got fed up with a website — called FunnyJunk — which had become particularly prone to re-hosting and monetizing his work. But oddly enough, the folks behind FunnyJunk decided they wanted to revisit the whole situation, almost exactly a year later.

J'aime :

Thoughts on IDAHO – International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia « Hummus For Thought First, is a short article by Joey Ayoub. Second, is an article by Joseph Zailaa. I’ve already written about this issue in a previous article so I hope you would bear with me with this one. I’ll make it short. Today we celebrate IDAHO, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. It is a day to remember both the past and on-going sufferings of many members of the LGBTQ community and, at the same time, a day of hope. But the unknown is now known. It would be quite naive of anyone to believe that homophobia can resist the winds of change. Happy IDAHO everyone, - Joey Ayoub Today is the International Day Against Homophobia and Trans-phobia, or IDAHO. Homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders a long time ago. But no matter, no matter. I find homophobia stupid simply because I see no reason behind it. The first and most common misconception is: “If someone is gay then that automatically makes them want to molest or rape you.” Like this:

After banning the burqa, French lawmakers target floral dresses | Les blogs An embarassing spectacle took hold of the French parliament on Tuesday when a Socialist government minister turned up to work in a floral dress. Rightwing lawmakers raised their eyebrows and hooted as minister of territories and housing, Cécile Duflot, took to the podium to speak about an architecture project. Centrist MP Jean-Christophe Fromantin called on the hecklers to pipe down and listen up, allowing Duflot to address the house. The reaction could have gone two ways in France, where the nasty 2011 Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair was initially received with more amusement than ire, and ogling or getting ogled at work comes as part of the job. Not surprisingly, the “sexist imbeciles” in question denied any wrongdoing. Clearly, 64-year-old Myard and 63-year-old Balkany have never been told that whistling and catcalling is far from what most women consider “paying homage to their beauty”, or that “paying homage to a woman’s beauty” is something best left to more romantic circumstances.

Watching The Defectives Gentle readers, I'm rerunning my annual Pride rant for the eighth year. I wrote this post in 2005 a couple of days after attending Pride here in NYC. In the following years I've reposted it in advance of the day in the hope of encouraging you to attend. My apologies to those that have read it before. Have a wonderful Pride. Love each other. Watching The Defectives Last Sunday at 12:30pm, I was in position on Christopher Street with Terrence, his glamor boys, and touring UK bloggers Dave and Darren. "David! David, a bookish looking middle-aged man, destroyed the festive mood in the little store in an instant. Luckily for David, the Asshole Killer mind ray I've been working on is not yet operational. And every year, the logical answer is that bankers and lawyers are boring to look at and that pictures of marching Gap employees don't sell newspapers. Yet right on cue, the day after Pride, the Davids of the blogosphere dished out their heavy-handed dissections of parades around the country.
